The Stewart GPL quote

The Stewart GPL quote

by Andre Warrin » Tue, 16 Oct 2001 18:12:40

There was a rumour that Stewart once stated he didn't find GPL
realistic, that the cars were much easier to drive in real life..
This 'statement' is quite often being used when it comes to the
realism of GPL.
Well.. to settle this for once and for all, Stewart has never heard of
GPL. Quote from the GPLEA forum:

  posted 14-10-2001 20:28
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While attending the 100 years of Ford Racing event today at the nearby
Henry Ford Museum, I had a chance to shake hands and chat very briefly
with Dan Gurney and Jackie Stewart.
Both men were extremely kind. I was struck by how narrow Stewart's
eyes were and how big Gurney's hand was when I shook it.

After telling each of them how much their careers had inspired me, I
asked each if he knew about GPL. Gurney said he had heard it was "very
realistic" but had never seen or played it. Stewart said he had never
even heard of it.

When I told Stewart it was a recreation of the 1967 season, he sighed
and said "I would be very easy to beat in my BRM." He went on to
describe the H-16 as a "pregnant elephant."

By the way, among the 100 race cars on exhibit, there was not a single
Lotus 49.

speaking of Lotus 49, did you know that there was one on sale at
www.fantasyjunction.com? I was really, really surprised to see it there. I'm
not sure whether it's still on sale or not though.

I don't want to get into a big debate on this one, but the Stewart quote
came from a radio show in the UK, and more than one person posted his
comments to different forums.

Maybe it was just an elaborate, CIA backed ***.

Either that, or the radio show story was just plain bullsh*t.

Could the anonymous post from the GPLEA forum be bullshit?

Hi Andre,

"Stewart said he had never even heard of it" !!!!
The Scotch Whisky must be getting to the wee Scots brain.

In 1999, at the Aust GP, we (Hyper Stimulator) did a corporate function for
Jackie Stewart's F1 people with a number of our simulators. Jackie was guest
of honor. We had one of our simulators running GPL and Jackie was invited
over for a drive. He declined but stood behind me for at least 15 min as I
demonstrated GPL. He was very impressed with with GPL in general and
especially with the accuracy of the tracks.

There is a very goood reason he did not play the game.  He had nothing to
gain and everything to loose. Just think of not being able to run a clean
lap with all those guys who do not understand how hard GPL is would look.
Especially if someone with minimal racing exp. went out and ran flawless
laps at a good pace.

You could mail the guy who wrote the post for more info if you want

Anyway, to be honest, this post was also quite interesting:

"Stewart does know about GPL. He asked too much for his name to be
involved and wasn't included. Since then he has varied between saying
it is no good or claiming he has never heard of it. He has not been
paid and so has no intention of promoting GPL."

(My God what did I do now, I gave the url to the GPLEA forum to DGF :)

Quite true, he certainly wouldn't want to be shown up by anyone. It'd
be good to hear his opinion if he tried it out in private.

Good to hear that he was impressed with the sim anyway. He was
obviously impressed if he hung around for a while and gave favourable
comments.

I for one would be interested to here comments made by any real world racing
drivers on GPL and some of the tracks!!!

Maybe Jon being in the position he is could post some.
