After 8 days of conflict/update nightmare's, my
AMD 950 is running perfectly. GPL with every
detail on max. I'm speechless! Not only the
distance you can see ahead and the sharpness of
the image, but the improved control.

Crystal Palace is so beautiful I can hardly keep my
eyes on the road.

N4 running smooth as glass. Running with no driving
aids. That is tricky.

Running a Hercules G2 GTS pro 64 meg ddr.

3DMARK 2001 2857
3DMARK 2000 7077

Smoking! If I get bored the MB will go to 1.3 cpu.
A store here in L.A. had a sale. Athlon 950/MB
combo $229. Case with 300w power supply $80.
$309 to upgrade from a Celeron 400. Couldn't
pass that up!

Was it pretty easy to do the upgrade ? I have been thinking of upgrading my
CPU also. Did you encounter any difficulties, or are you an old pro at this
??

I have an Athlon 1.33ghz on order, already have the 256mb of DDR ram.
Should be able to overclock to 1.45ghz or so. I'm gonna smoke you
baby. :-)

just how good are these graphics cards with these fsaaa or whatever it
is and a geforce 2 for that matter.

i think gpl looks gr8 on my voodoo 3 and duron 900, am i in for a
shock ?

if anyones got any screenshots or can make some, can you email em to
me ?

Building/upgrading a system isn't rocket science . Just get a decent upgrade
book , become familiar with the components and be methodical . I built a new
system back in Feb based on a Duron 700mhz , Abit KT7A mobo and a new case
and used a few components from my old system . All went smoothly and the
computer runs without any probs now . Racing sims are now a lot sweeter .

If all you're thinking of doing is upgrading the cpu to max out your mobo's
potential then go for it . You'd be surprised how easy it is . Just mind you
discharge any static electricity first and that your heatsink and fan will
be good enough. Some mobos need a bios upgrade but not very often .

FSAA on the Geforce2 cards is nothing to write home about. On a
Voodoo5 it is very good at 4X, but you will find that in most games
you will be using 2X because 4X uses too much video bandwidth.
Personally I prefer using high res on a Geofrce2 and no FSAA than
running at 800x600 2X FSAA on a Voodoo5.

Bzzzzt! Wrong, very wrong. Only dif between a Duron and T-Bird is
128kb v 256kb L2 cache. If you are on a budget then it is the cpu of
choice.

An AMD upgrade isn't bad just that you need to be aware of installing VIA 4
in1 drivers.

Put your Window Cab files on your HD if not already.

Build the system as you would any other pc.

Start up the system the first time in safe mode with your original HD before
the upgrade.

In Device Manager remove ALL (yes I mean ALL) devices then, restart system
normally.

It will re-detect everything from scratch without having any legacy devices
from interfering.

One other thing to mention is make sure you have a good case and have imo at
least one case add-on fan blowing in and 1 blowing out. These AMD's run
pretty hot. I also recommend the VIA Hardware Monitor software (comes
usually with MB) as well running to monitor system heat.

a duron matches a pentium 3 mhz for mhz, i know i've tested it with
many benchmarks, as have many others, dont believe me try #athlon on
efnet for a channel of supernerds who know more than any of us put
together

Your 2001 score seems a bit low for that graphics card. I use the OLD

Not if you buy a mb with an AMD 760 chipset. Just need the VIA gart
driver.

On which card? Both support high res textures now. I'm just saying I
like the look of high resolution at good frame rates better than
lower res and FSAA. I run GPL at 1280x1024 and get max frame rate of
36fps on a P3 800. You won't on a Voodoo5. Nascar Heat at it's highest
res only cost me 1 fps going up from 800x600. Again, the V5 will lose
mucho frame rate doing that in NH.
