Saturday morning :o)
Anyway, I was at Brands Hatch over the weekend, testing on Saturday and
racing on Sunday. It was a lot of fun. Paddock Hill bend is just an
amazing corner! :)) The test day was superb, as I got to run with the
British Formula Ford teams that will run in the national 'Slick50'
championship. I was running a '95 Swift so it was hard to keep up with
the 2000 cars, however in the last session of the day in damp conditions
I was able to keep up with them in the turns! I was well chuffed. I got
down to a 50.4 best lap in the dry 3rd session before the rain came (4
sessions in all - each session lasted 25 minutes). The best lap set in
the car I was driving is a 49.4 so to be within a second of the pace on
my first ever day at the track was pleasing.
Sunday, raceday was very long. There were 9 races (and 9 qualifying
sessions) to get through and my race was race 9! The track was dry and
we had good weather all day. Qualifying went okay - I got down to a 50.4
very early in the session before I got ***in my right foot and then a
few yellows appeared on the track. Getting a good time after that was
almost impossible. I was 4th on the grid, just 0.7s behined the pole
man, who incidently was in a '99 Van Diemen!
It was well past 6:00pm before we got called to the assembly area for
the race. I was well fired up after almost 5 months since my last race!
The race start was very tricky, as the grid was on a steep downhill
slope - and I was on the outside line for Paddock. Nevertheless, I held
the car across the brake and accelrator managing to hold the correct
revs and got a great start. I held the outside line right the way around
paddock and defended my 4th place upto the next turn, Druids. I was on
the brakes as late as I dared and nipped into 3rd!! I decided then that
it was better to hold my position and build a gap to 4th before trying a
maouver for 2nd. It wasn't long into the 15 lap race before we got
amongst the backmarkers. The gap to the leader was still very small and
coming into the last corner the 2nd placed man hesitated in traffic and
I got him!! :)) I held 2nd for another lap before, coming along the
front straight I was repassed into Paddock. Back in 3rd. For the
remainder of the race I stayed in 3rd. All 3 of us were still close
together and lapping the backmarkers was making life difficult. This was
to my favour however, as again, coming out of the last corner, on the
last lap this time again the 2nd placed man hesitiated, took a wider
line to pass a backmarker as I went low, taking 2nd and the chequred
flag!! I was _ECSTATIC_!! :o) It was a superb dice, very clean and I
felt very happy with the car. I feel a bit silly saying it but my team
really really, truely and honestly (trying not to sound like Jeff Gordon
too much) were really good to me all weekend and worked on the car all
the time it was in the garage. I couldn't have asked for more.
Perfect weekend,
