Good Wheel, Shifter and Pedals?

by Dan » Thu, 27 May 2004 08:30:24

Hi,

I am just getting into sim racing and have my system on order.  I am now
looking for a good wheel, shifter, pedal combo that makes the racing
more realistic.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Dan

Good Wheel, Shifter and Pedals?

For the price ( US 80 couple months ago) I am totally happy with my logitech
Momo racing wheel (black w/shifter and paddles).  Good FF after getting
settings tuned for each driving sim or game.  Good profiler software for
setting buttons (lots of them) .  I recommend it for a starter wheel.  There
are others and lots more dollars available but for price, good deal.

I agree its a good wheel but the pedals will probably ***out. I'm on my
second set and have just ordered the repair kit from digi-key and read up on
the pedal fix so now it's major surgery to correct a known flaw in the pedals
of these. Wish I could afford some BRD or ECCI pedals but...and can't get
enough feedback on the act-labs pedals to decide.

Smart move on ordering new pots from digikey instead of scrapping the wheel,
like some people have done. Or paying tons more from someone else claiming
to sell "repair kits" with just the pots with a 200% markup.

I should probably open up my wheel and find out what value pot is in it and
replace it with the next digkey order..

If you have the budget Ball Racing are apparently about to release a full FF
unit, rumours of 1,000.00 (one thousand UK pounds) price tag have been
bantered around though.

OK so maybe not a first time purchase then.

Andi.

Good Wheel, Shifter and Pedals?

I am looking for a pedal set that has a clutch (sim games support a
clutch right?) and a shifter that is gated.  I am going to be using Toca
Race Driver 2 and Nascar 2003 and eventually GTR.  Will there be
compatibility issues?  Still looking for advice and suggestions...

Thanks,
Dan

Well shortly after I got home a good samartian pointed me here.....<Give the

I'm gonna try this and see....oh and the read me that was included:

=======================================================================
Logitech MOMO Racing Pedal Fix driver update Beta 1 (05/03/2004)
==========================================================================

Contents:
---------
This package contains an updated driver for the Logitech MOMO Racing
steering wheel, along with a simple installer to update your system
configuration.

Improvements:
-------------
. Pedal "going out of calibration" solved
. Built-in "MOMO Racing Centering fix"
. Filter spikes (new for this release)

Requirements:
-------------

. Recent Logitech *** Software (4.x) successfully installed
. Logitech MOMO Racing wheel

Warning:
--------
. This is beta software. It might do what you want, it might not.
Don't bother customer support with problems, rather, let us know.
How to contact us is described at the end of the file.

. If upgrading on a Windows 2000 or XP system, the existing driver
"digital signature" will be voided. This means that you will get
a dialog box warning you that the driver is not signed when you
unplug your device and plug it back into a different port. There
is no performance impact, just ignore the warning.

If you still feel up to it, here we go...

Known problems:
---------------
. Under certain circumstances, your wheel may end up leaning to
one side rather than be centered. If that happens, just move
the wheel all the way left/right and it'll fix itself.

Install:
--------

1. Run MOMORacingPedalUpdate.exe.
2. Click "Upgrade" to update, "Revert" to restore the original
   version.

A few hints:

. If "Upgrade" is greyed out, you have already upgraded, or
something with the folder's contents is not in order.

. If "Revert" is greyed out, you haven't upgraded yet.

. If anything doesn't work as expected, reboot your system ;)

Thanks:
-------
... go to all the people who pointed out the problems and gave a lot
of good feedback.

Folder Details:
---------------

The contents of the zip file are as follows:
. readme.txt:                this file
. MomoRacingPedalUpdate.exe: installer for the update
. Win2K\:                    Windows 2000/XP specific driver file
. Win9X\:                    Windows 98/Me specific driver file

Feedback:
Please provide any feedback for this patch to

   board at http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Good Wheel, Shifter and Pedals?

The link to the file did not work,  I had to poke around the site for
awhile before I found it...but it 'SEEMS' to fix the problem.  My pedal
was properly calibrated in both windows and the F1c mods without showing
any low throttle response.  AND...I went right back to an NR2k3 track
where I had been practicing and shaved a second off my pb on my first hot
lap.  Even with the calibration in-game with nr2k3, there seems to be a
little more throttle response...plus I can now use all the pedal range
which hopefully will smooth out the throttle inputs.
I said the update 'SEEMS' to fix the problem because in the past, some
workarounds from Logitech were not permanent.  I raced the last 1/4 of my
TPTCC season with only 80% range being reported.  I hope this fix will
continue working.

thanks muchos

After about a week, the throttle pedal is still holding 100% travel
so this may work after all.  It's strange that software can be used to
fix a hardware problem.  This doesn't feel like they have shortened up
the possible reporting spectrum, however I would ask somebody with
actuall talent to try the fix and report back.  Seems smooth and
progressive to me.

Made a 4 second leap at one of the Trans Am Master tracks that had the
AI just running away from me.  Which means in the Nr2k3 T/A Master rank,
I'm now officially the fastest of the SLOWEST guys.  :)  Where else but
here can I make the bottom 10% sound like nearly the best lol!
