T2 - fixing to desk

by N.Swa » Fri, 04 Jul 1997 04:00:00

I have just bought a T2 and it is great in games like GP2 and
Carmageddon.  However I do have a problem.
After a few laps of say GP2 the T2 starts to move about on my desktop.
My desk is a standard MFI flat pack affair and is not thick enough for
the clamps to tighten on their own so I have used cardboard to plug the
gap. The suction cups also don't stick well either

Anyone know any good trick for getting it stuck solid!!!
Its a great wheel but of no use if it moves up and down the desk.
I did ring Thrustmaster and the guy there said  he wasn't aware of any
problem attaching a T2 fimly to a desk and that I have been unlucky.

PLease help if you can

Thanks

(snip)

Get small piece of 3/4 inch plywood and put it between the clamps
and your desk.
Then you'll be able to do those HOTLAPS you been dreaming about.

Hi N.Swan,

don't stick well either <<

This is not an unusual problem even when your desk is thick enough.

1) Remove the suction cups altogether. They're useless and are part of the
cause of the problem.

2) Use something uncompressible to fill up the gap. a thick solid piece of
*** is good if you have it. A couple of solid type mouse mats etc, or a
thick magazine.

This should solve most of the problem. As I say, a single thick piece of
firm *** sheeting is best if you can get it.

attaching a T2 fimly to a desk and that I have been unlucky. <<

The guy needs to get around more. This is a common problem. I have several
friends who all own T2s and have all have to solve this same problem.

Hope this helps.

The suction cups never really worked for me.  I have "tray" that I built
out of lamenated pressboard (material for kitchen cabinets).  I used
"industrial strength" velcro on the T2 base and the tray.  When I am
racing the tray is clamped to my desk with the T2 firmly velcroed down.
When I not racing the tray just sits there with my keyboard covering the
velcro.

I had the same problem with my T2.

I solved it be obtaining a piece of *** and cutting it to about the
size of a mouse mat, and placing under the desk between the desk clamps.

Obviously you need to get a sheet/piece of *** thick enough to fill
the gap.
*** type material is best as this resists moving around and has good
frictional grip.

Mouse mats can be used if you cannot get hold of any ***, if you have
some spare ones?

Buy some velcro strips--put some on the desk--put some on the bottom of
the
whl unit.  This holds my TSW in place and its fairly heavy in weight.

I opened mine up and screwed a big block of lead in the rear of the unit.
This moves the center of gravity of the wheel assembly well over the
desk so that the suction cups are all in compression.  Adds to the
weight of the base unit and makes it feel more solid.

That's a good idea. I had a problem similar to N. Swan's...
My desk is thick enough, but it has a large beveled edge on it. The
edge interfered with the clamps before  they contacted the actual
underside of the desk.
I cut the side off of a corrogated cardboard box, and stick it between
the clamps and the underside of the desk.
It works good. You can clamp it down tight, and the box will give
before the clamps.

Also, I don't know if this will work for the T2 (you might have just a
bit too much leverage on a wheel), but it worked great for my
Wingman Extreme joystick:
I bought stick on velcro at a craft shop. I used 4 1" pieces of it on
the bottom of my stick, and it has held the stick great for a couple
of years.  It's nice because if I need the desk space, I can just pull
the stick off, and it only leaves the 4 fuzzy pads, which really
aren't a problem for me.
I wish I could affix and remove my T2 as fast... Maybe I'll try it.

If you decide to try this, affix both sides of the velcro to the
stick/wheel so that they are all on your wheel or stick bottom.
Peel off the backing of the bottom pieces before you set the
controller down. When you set it down, the glue will stick the lower
portion to the desk, and the velcro will line up perfectly when you
install the controller.

My nephew had this same problem and I fixed it by placing a board
between the clamps and the desk.  You might try the same since it is
more solid than cardboard.  Cardboard would compress after a time and
become loose, but wood would not.
