GPL: Most dangerous turns??

by Speedy Fas » Sun, 23 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Two questions:  what are the most danerous turns in GPL?

What are the most difficult turns in GPL?

Here's my (limited) opinion...  limited because I don't know all the
circuits.

Most dangerous:  turn 3(?) at Rouen.  It's so easy to slide off the
left turn and down the hill :)

Most difficult:
     -  Two turns at Mosport in the first half of the
circuit... i think u know which ones I mean :)
     - Eau-Rouge.

I reckon the Masta Kink at Spa is one of the most diffucult
corners.  It looks easy but if you get slightly off line or go
too fast there is not much spare track to save you.  I quite
often end my races at Spa hitting one of the buildings after the
kink.

It's also a corner where you have to carry as much speed as
possible as a long straight follows it.

To me... here's a few real ***s:

Tiergarten (left-hander under the bridge after the long straight) at the
Ring.

Turn 1 at Rouen.

Turn 2 at Mosport

Abbey at Silverstone.

Paddock Hill Bend at Brands..

Esses at Snetterton.

I'm having a tough time with the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca. More often than
not, I end up backed into the wall at the top of the hill, driver's right.

you need to line up the turn BEFORE you crest the hill.  Get over to
the left as you make the last climb and take a line that moves you to
the right of the track as you crest the hill.  Braking should be done
before you begin your turn in.

The T1/2 combination at Mexico takes some beating. Lose it in Turn 1 and you
scrape yourself off the wall and run into the infield  only to find the
black flag next time round. Assuming you get T1 right, the next left hander
is a *** to turn into and exit quickly. The exit here is one of the key
areas you need to get right to lap quickly.

I am amazed that no one mentioned the CHICANE AT MONTE CARLO!

IMO. All those other turns are a drive in the park compared to this sucker.
It scares me every time I drive through it, and I have left more debris and
scorh marks on the track in that spot, than at any corner of any other
track. That is, depite only racing it when compelled to by my league
schedule :)

Gordon

Dangerous?  T1 in a pickup race.<g>

Difficult?  Hairpin at Rouen/Chicane at Monaco.

Nobody mentioned  the chicane at Monaco...
Surely one of the most dangerous?...

I agree... Monaco's chicane and the Masta kink must be the top candidates
for most dangerous turn.

St. Antoniusbuche is a close third. While more dangerous than either of the
above (blind with a crest at the apex) taking it with a large safety margin
has less impact on lap time, so it ranks below them IMO.

Most difficult turn will depend on who you talk to. Personally, I find most
of the corners at Silverstone pretty hard to "nail" consistently.

I agree, Masta is the most dangerous turn in GPL.  I really wish in the
movie "Grand Prix" they had put a camera on a real F1 car instead of
whatever slow car they used for the footage going thru Masta.
