a little OT....modem,processor..

I decided to upgrade my modem from an old us robotics X2 to a v90 type
as i was strapped for cash I could only afford a cheap software modem (at
the time I was unaware of the difference between a hardware and software
modem)
playing on vroc is now impossible ,warping and jerking like mad is the order
of the day.
my system is a pentium 1 233, 192M ram and a 12mb voodoo 2 card
I realise that my next purchase will have to be a faster processor, I indend
to get a Duron 800 ,overclocked to 1 gig and plant it in a kt7 raid MB. Will
this eliminate the modem probs?

I briefly tried a software modem on a P3-650, and it was a total nightmare.
Browsing the web was very slow and online *** was impossible.  A new CPU
may reduce the problem a little, but I don't think you'll be getting any fun
out of Vroc again until you get a real hardware modem.

I use a Diamond SupraExpress 56e PRO which is reckonned to be one of the
best *** modems.  It's done an excellent job and only cost about 55
(ukp).

Sorry for being a bit ignorant here.  How do you tell if it is a software or
hardware modem?

FWIW, if your main concern is onlining *** (VROC), as opposed to web
browsing, you wouldn't even need a 56K modem.  When I race on VROC, I get the
best performance  connecting at 19200, so a 28.8 modem would work quite well.

AFAIK though, you're much better off with a real modem (_not_ a Winmodem).

Although there is a case to be made for the Lucent Technologies (LT)
WinModem, which is pretty good for *** - see www.lagless.com

A diamnd Supra* are good cheap modems (if u can find one)

I picked up a Diamond SupraExpress 56i when they were clearing them
out for like $20 US. The lowest I can ping with it is about 100

Im on cablemodem now, but I still have ro resort to using my Supra
at least half the time, since this cable pings like 200 at the lowest
during busy hours.

Usually on the box it will say "Requires Win95/98/NT/2000".  Pure
hardware modems will work with any operating system because they don't
require device drivers and such, they simply appear to the computer as
a regular COM port.
