SCGT , very low in-car frame rates?

by Loosa » Fri, 23 Feb 2001 22:55:05

I just bought a new Voodoo 5500 to replace my old Rage 128, and I have seen
excellent frame rate improvements ( as much as 3X) for most racing games, but
SCGT and Motocross Madness 2 show almost no framerate improvement (only 5 to 7
FPS faster).
GPL is running as much as 40+ FPS at 1024x768 full details full field of
cars, and Nascar Heat is running at about a 32 FPS avg with a 43 car field at
800x600 full details, but SCGT gets only about 20 FPS and sometimes dips into
the ***s at most tracks from an inside car view with a full field at almost
any resolution. If I drive from an outside chase car view frame rates double at
all resolutions and are very good, which seems strange given that the in-car
interior view is not very special while the external car models are among the
very finest in any sims (hi resolution and great reflections and animations).
Also, the scenery in SCGT is not all that special, and at some tracks is
downright ugly in places. Also, Motocross Madness 2 runs at a hi FPS with most
of the details turned off at all resolutions, but if you turn all of the
details on it runs erratically between 17 and 40 FPS at different points on a
given race course with just 10 CPU racers on the track, which is barely any
improvement over where it was with the Rage 128 card, and this is at 640x480. I
know that I need a faster cpu , I have a 600 pentium 3, but it seems strange
that some games that are not as graphically photorealistic, and supposedly are
not as demanding with respect to vehicular physics models as say GPL, run
slowly at even low rez with all details on . GP3 runs extremely well on even my
old card at 1280x1024 with all details on, and exceeds 60FPS with the
VooDoo5500 with 4X FSAA, and looks Photorealistic, although it sometimes
freezes up and crashes without warning.

Two tips; first of all, do not use Glide as it seems to limit the
texture memory and as such performance is degraded with all options on.
Secondly, use a simpler rear view mirror. I have no idea why, but the
rear view mirror with a frame degrades performance a lot.

I hope this helps!

Somewhere on the scgt sites..they used to have a patch that
cut the mirror size down by a quarter or a half.  This helps...2nd.  Get
and use a utility called enditall.  You need a little more overhead for the
ISI sims for some reason.  3rd.  Use 2xfsaa if you have speed problems and
make sure you get drivers that are dated at least November of 2000.  The
early drivers had a problem with the two non-fsaa settings...The 'fastest'
performance was often slower than just the 'single chip' setting.
I found SCGT really benefited from a V5.
Remember too, if you have some of the privately built cars, some of those
have polygon counts which are two to three times as much as the standard ISI
cars, when one of those is near you, your frame-rate will crawl.

Impossible. GPL is capped at 36fps.

a V5. Not as fast as it should be considering the qulaity of graphics,
but smooth enough. Turn off some of the details, I use the medium
quality track graphics and no environmental mapping.

Loosay...40+ in GPL...?

No....advice needed here i think....

1.Go to an opticians.
2.If all ok,go to a Doctor to book a nose reduction operation.

Coz you sure have a pinocchio nose mate.

Morgan,

Didn't you download the "FPS-meter performance tuner" yet? You must be the only
one out there without that great utility.
