SCGT and frame rates

by Olav K. Malm » Wed, 19 May 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

I picked up SCGT this weekend. (After having a long argument with myself if I should buy Toca2 or SCGT. I picked up SCGT because it was cheaper, even i liked the demo of Toca2 better) I have to run the game (or sim or whatever) on my flatmate's system (Cel300A not successfully overclocked yet and Creative Voodoo Banshee) because my computer (P133) is downgraded to a DVD player.

I got a real rush of this game. I won the qualifying season and I hade huge fun. Then I went to the GT2 class. More competetive field and a bigger challenge. But then I startet to notice and said to myself: "What is it with the frame rate of this game? I can run GPL at 36 solid on 800x600 (not with all details of course) and this game is choppy at 640x480"

I think I have all three graphic-details on 2nd lowest and the mirror on without frame. I have also enabled mip-mapping.

Have I missed some graphic detail settings ? Why am I not able to turn of this big empty grandstand at Las Vegas ? Are there a frame rate counter somewhere ? How come a game less complex than GPL is more demanding on the hardware?

I'm confused. And maybe a bit disappointed. Specially since this game has been received well in this newsgroup.

I'm getting a new system in a few weeks (PIII 450, V2, 128 MB) so I relly hope this game will run well then. After all, some months ago some people here was making fun of people asking if a PII 450 could run GPL, but I am afraid that very soon people will be getting negative answers to such questions.

I'm not trying to bash SCGT here because I thingk the idea and the gameplay is plain great (and thanks to the author of the advanced editor). I'm just concerned about frame rates and ridiculously hardware-demanding racing games (or sims or whatever)

SCGT and frame rates

The "Las Vegas" track seems to be the slowest one - I've read many many posts
about people turning down details just for that track. All I can think of is
that they're rendering nearly  the entire thing at once (you can always see the
grandstands) and that makes it run a lot more polygons than the other tracks.
As for why you can't turn off the grandstands, I don't know, it seems like an
obvious design choice to boost frame rate.

my suggestion for boosting the framerate is turn off the rear view mirror -
it really slows down the game

my system is PII-400, 256mb RAM and SLI V2 12mb - and it was choppy with the
mirror on!
