GPL: Voodoo2 and DirectX6.1

GPL: Voodoo2 and DirectX6.1

I found a site in the Microsoft boards that has the DirectX6.1 beta.  I've
seen some folks here say it solves the lockups at the menu screen while
using a Voodoo2 and the latest drivers.  I'm considering loading DirectX6.1,
but since it's a beta, I'm a bit hesitant.  One person in the Microsoft
group said it was a bit buggy, but gave no examples.  Has anybody had any
problems with 6.1?  I'd love to be able to play GPL again without
reinstalling my older drivers.

Thanks...
Dave

     Well, I have a Creative Labs 8mb Voodoo2, Direct X 6.0 and I haven't run
into any problems with GPL

6.1 doesn't solve the 'locking GPL' problem. Nothing does. We have to use
the old 'release' V2 drivers until someone decides to fix this. DX6.1 is OK
though, so don't worry on that score. It's the V2 'DX6' drivers that are the
problem.

I had the same problem with the menu lockup after I installed Monsters new
drivers. One time I actually made it into the car and the graphics were
superb, also had none of the stuttering I experienced with the old drivers.
I indeed installed DX 6.1 and the lockups as well as the flashing cursor
disappeared but the improved graphics and smooth gameplay continued.
I have had this configuration for 2 weeks and have had no problems with it
at all.
BTW, I went from DX 6 to DX 6.1               Good Luck!  Dino

Thanks for the input.  Someone in the Sierra boards suggested just copying
the old glide2x and glide3x dlls into the GPL directory, and now it runs
again.  I'll probably keep running that way for now, since it works, but I
do plan on updating to 6.1 (I'm running 6.0 now as well).  I'm just glad to
be able to play GPL again.  And with my new PC, I can actually race the
whole field (not that I see them much).

Thanks!

Dave

For Creative Labs users:
I did download the new (Dec Driver package - albeit testing phase) from
the Creative Labs testing site.  They might be why I don't have any lock-up
problems with Direct X version 6.

No, that's not the reason. The 'new' Creative drivers are still using the
beta 3Dfx reference as their core and hence still cause the lockups. The
reason that you are not getting any lockups is that not everyone does - only
most people!
