OT GPL Real Lotus 49 Question

All,
I just got a model of the Lotus 49 from Exoto and am wondering about
the pipe that extends down the outside of the left side of the body.
It appears to be a pipe running I presume from the engine to the
radiator in front. It looks strange to see a pipe on the outside but I
suppose that since it is HOT you would'nt want it running next to the
driver!  Did the cooled water then return to the engine via a pipe on
the inside of the chassis?  Thanks.  I think I have learned more about
GP racing since I got GPL than I knew in my previous 20 years of
interest!

How much was that?  I've been looking for an diecast Eagle (or even a
kit), but I can't find anything.  Found a Ferrari, a Lotus, and a
Brabham, but nothing else.

Well I can't speak for Jeff, but the place I got mine from (Motorsport
Collector in Chicago) now charges $120.  They used to be $90, but Exoto
upped their prices to the retailers toward the end of last year.  BTW - If
you like sportscars the Exoto Cobra Daytona coupes are some of the nicest
die casts I have ever seen.

John,

It was $100 (from an Ad in the January Car and Driver) ..  but like
Steve Smith said in the GPL book, it does look cool sitting on top of
the monitor.  I will admit to having had my fill of Loti, though.

I couldn't find an Eagle listed at http://www.ewacars.com/index.html
either.  I've bought some smaller 1/43 scale modern F1 cars from them.

Maybe we can talk www.exoto.com into making the grid of 1967.  They
also make a Cobra Daytona which I think you are fond of (maybe just
the roadster).

Happy hunting.

That pipe is indeed the water return pipe. The underside of the tub was
stepped to form pipeways on both sides for oil and water feed to the
engine,so all pipes were outside the main tub.

Additional trivia:

I recall that this caused a problem with the BRM(?) at Watkins Glen in the
mid-1960's.  On this car, the external water pipe cut right across the
center of the white circle (background for the car number).  It made it
very difficult for Timing and Scoring to tell the difference between the
two team cars (numbers 8 & 9 if memory serves), since T & S were looking
down from the tower (the pipe cast a shadow).  The numbers were
changed/moved (forget how) before the race, after a little "conference" in
the garage.
