Jim Sokoloff's Presence

As I read this NG each day, one aspect stands out.  Papyrus is the ONLY
sim company that supports it's products here.  I know that this has been
said before, but it deserves to be said at least twice.  It is simply
amazing how many whiners have had their questions answered and their
whines muted by Jim.  This is by far the best type of
customer/technical/product support I have ever encountered.  As I have
the comfort that a patch will come in due time, my frustration with any
bugs has diminished considerably.  Why sweat it when you have official
word from the horse's mouth that things will be tended to?

I thank Jim/Papyrus for taking the time and effort to do this, although
I get the feeling that he would be here even if noone thanked him.

Thanks,
Matt Lewis

Jim has indicated that his presence here is not official. I appreciate his
help even more since he's offering it on his own time. Thanks Jim.

To keep this post from being entirely off topic, I'll ask a question. I hear
people talking about modifying the track.txt files etc... in Nascar2 (ie.
adjusting the mirrors). Does anybody know if modifications like that will be
checked by NRO and considered to be illegal? I don't want to get used to a
new mirror then have the NRO stop me at the door. I don't want to change the
mirrors anyway.....just curious.

As you pointed out, my presence here is "unofficial." But here's an
answer to that question:
There are values in the track.txt file which users have every good
reason to modify to suit the game to their taste (RELS is the best one
I can think of in N1, but there might be others.) The mirrors are a
personal preference item, and since we allowed you to change RELS in
Hawaii, I'm guessing that we will allow you to change all personal
preference items in N2 and be OK with NRO.
That's not a 100% iron-clad guarantee, but since that's the only way
that would make sense, I'm guessing that's the way the NRO team will
handle it.

Ya, Jim is great- I've never seen such an honest guy in a group like
this. Just puts it out there. Nevertheless, he will have to learn to
wear a coat of teflon around here- no matter how nice you are, there
will always be folks with attitudes ready to burn people in effigy.

Now Jim, how about that PSX port of Incycar?!?

So far so good.

My only problem is realizing that I have to bite my tongue and not
just lambaste someone publicly in the newsgroup when they make some
outrageous claim(s). So far so good on that point too...

I'll make a note of your suggestion, but there are currently no plans
to do that title on the PSX.

I don't think I agree with that. Even if there were ABSOLUTELY NO
BUGS, people would still have questions, suggestions, and problems
getting it to run on their systems (due to misconfigurations and the
inherent problem of 500 different vendors making parts for PCs)

The product has some bugs and some rough edges, and that's a fact of
life in this industry right now. Doesn't mean we aren't trying, and
doesn't mean we're going to stop*** out here helping people.

If they got it right the 1st time...they wouldn't need to support it
here.......

Not true in the least.  Almost every product needs some support.  Picture
the idiots like me who have the stupid questions involving non-bug
related situations (i.e. How do I..., can I..., does it...).  Picture a
perfect program with no (zero) support.... it'd still get bad "press."

Papyrus is also sharing their insights into the inner workings of the
sim.  Yeh, that's right, the parts they got right the 1st time. ;-)
