GPL - advice on shifting

Hi,
I've been trying to do "the shift/throttle thing" properly in GPL.  I
usually hit the shift lever first on my T2 and then let off the gas for a
split second.  How much do I need to really let off the throttle to not
effect the engine? (1/2 1/4 of the way), it is quite a different way of
thinking compared to the previous racing sims I've played.  I was doing a
half hour practice at Monza last night and I cooked the engine!  Going
out of the Parabolica I noticed my engine was struggling, I and there was
black smoke in my mirrors!  Now if only I can get my braking and
cornering right! :)

Later,
John

I found it difficult to find the "sweet spot" on this as well. Just check
your tell tale to see how far you are reving it. Eventually you will find
the optimum rythem.

Get off the throttle first. shift.  get on as quick as possible.

This is just one of those things that had me drooling in the demo, and
I'm still smiling now in the full game. No syncromesh here!
Unfortunately it's just a matter of listening to your engine and
watching your tell tale. I find it's even harder at the start of the
race as you can't here your engine for the noise of the others.
Practise, practise, practise!

Also, make sure your gear ratios are set up. A little tweaking from
the default values should be enough. I found that it was easier to
shift up to 3rd in the BRM ASAP as you exit the Para at Monza. Not
only does this avoid over revving but also over torque and thus
snaking around the track towards the S/F line in front of all those
flat spectators!

It also mentions in the book that you should avoid braking and turning
at the same time although I have found that softening the rear bar
helps to stop your arse overtaking you! Then again, I've only managed
a 1:35 lap at Monza in the BRM so I'm still crap!
