GPL: shifting (rookie question)

by Hamm » Tue, 15 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I admit I'm a rookie right of the top, I pretend nothing.

I have always played with auto-shift, and this weekend started
using manual shift.  Interesting man... I'm in a love-hate
relationship having that control, getting better.  I still have
not broken my Spa record made while auto-shifting, but got close.
I really, really thought manual shifting would be a lot faster???
I got a 3:26.7 in a Ferrari autoshifting, and only a 3:29 manual
shifting (??.)

My question is throttle whilst shifting.  For awhile, I had
mental problems letting off the throttle while I manually
shifted.  The engine revs high but the shift happens and in some
cases a speed advantage is derived (main place this happens is
Malmedy exit) from not letting off the gas.  Does this hurt the
motor?  Do some people just shift all the time without ever
lifting off the throttle?  Is manual shifting (at Spa anyway)
faster than auto-shift aid?

GPL: shifting (rookie question)

The only person I know that doesn't let off is my friend who owns a
Toyota Tercel 5 speed, and his piston rings are all burned off, you know
what from? Overrevving.  He does let off the gas in his car, but slips
the clutch like crazy.  In the game he doesn't let off at all, and he
says, "it won't hurt it.."  hehhe...yeah right.
Anyway, enough with the story telling, yes, it will hurt the motor,
you can blow it.  I haven't figured out exactly when the engine blows,
but I have blown it from over revving in between shifts.  It was really
wierd.  Engine running strong, coming down the front strech at South
Africa, overreved it just a little bit going into 4th gear, and
BAM...flames, motor parts, and no revs.  The m***of the story is, let
off in between gears.  You don't even have to let off all the way, once
you get the experience, you can let off to about 1/2-3/4 throttle so
that it almost sounds like an automatic when you shift.  Hope that
helps.

Not the ones that want to finish a race that's more than a few laps. I've
blown my engine after about 8 qualifying laps shifting without lifting
(but no sick downshifts with the engine at 15000rpm or anything like
that).

Not by a very wide margin.

If you look at the majority of so-called "hot-laps" at various sites you
observe (and hear) the excruciating effect of not lifting. I wish I could
say it isn't faster not to lift, but it probably is. Lifting off just
becomes an easy habit with practice. GPL should appeal to drivers with some
sense of aesthetics, but apparently not where our Macho hotlappers are
concerned, and they set a bad example.

Let it be noted that Jim Clark, whilst the fastest driver, actually was
renowned for his gentleness with throttle, brakes and steering. His
mechanics reported his engine and other car parts in much better condition
after a practice session than those of other drivers with more brawn than
brain. I'd rather do a 1 minute 30 secs at Monaco with panache than a 1.29
after destroying my engine and crashing or spinning fif*** times to get
there!

All My Hotlaps are always done with lifting between gears. Its not a long lift
and sometimes the revs do go up a bit but I do lift for every shift.

And he also let be known that whilst driving the Lotus he found a way to
shift up without lifting......

Cheers!

I recall an interview with some Goodyear engineer who stated that Jim Clark
always wore out all four tires at the same rate. JimClark = balance
