GPL 'Shift + R'

GPL 'Shift + R'

Nobody has commented to date (that I recall, anyway) on the delicious
sense of humour used by the programmer when 'Shift + R' is invoked!!

From an external view, be it F10 or in replay, the way in which the car
suddenly falls from the sky with a silent WHUMP!, squashes its springs
and then jiggles back to normal is very Pythonesque!! I love it and hope
that Papyrus keep it for the full release.

Hehe, it's one of these detail that is soo good that nobody talks about it,
since no one complaints about ;-)

I remember somebody saying it's like when you put a real life RC car on the
track, and it's clearly a good similarity !!!  Only bad thing is that now I
have no need to put my car back on the track, if I ever see myself the wrong
way in the grass, I just take my keyboard an voil !  I'm back on the track
;-)

<g> This will be helpfull at the 'Ring, since there is soo many turns that
you won't always know if your facing the good or bad side of the track ;-)
(hey just found that the 'Ring inversed is another cool 22km track !!).
Double the fun !!

Speaking of things not commented on yet....  Drive up to your pitboard
and you will see that the data for your previous lap, is indeed on the
little board being held by your crew member.  Nice touch.

GPL 'Shift + R'

by Todd » Sat, 02 May 1998 04:00:00

Yes I have had a little think about this. It has been good in the demo to
use Shift+R but up until now (in Papyrus sims) that has always used to
restart the race. I can not see it being used in the full game as it is in
the demo.
If so while using the demo it might be an idea not to get to used to
hitting the Shift+R everytime you crash as a bit of practice getting back
onto the track could be useful once we get the final game. Also if Shift+R
is used in the final game as a race restart then it would be a bummer to
kill a good race because you were so used to hitting Shift+R to get back
onto the track.
BTW its been out nearly a month and GPL demo is still the most used program
on my computer. Ive done over a thousand laps, and have a best of 108.32
with 107 in my sights. To think a month ago there were many race sims to
chose from, and now there is only one.
  Todd.

You must not buy many games.  What about SODA, Quake2 and StarCraft?
Those are my top three games (and they are the full versions :).

BTW, I bought a P2/333 to get SODA non-rendition upto speed.  You bet
it'll
be GREAT with GPL :)

I've raced maybe 50 laps and got to 1:10.xx (probably not that
consistantly),
but I can't see spending THAT much with a pre-alpha demo.  I love the
demo
and will spend alot of time with the FULL release.  Its just hard to
spend time on one track with no setup options -- none!

To think a month ago there were many race sims to

I believe SODA and GPL will be the best sims when GPL is released.
As for calling the GPL-demo the one and only right now, I don't think
so.

Jason.

GPL 'Shift + R'

Excellent point Todd. :) I have a feeling tho that as GPL will be
"real time" what with the live feed and all. Hitting
Shift--err--something will not have the same effect. I have this
feeling that GPL will include a reload race weekend button. I think N2
should have had this in preference to the shift-r in race. If you
stuff up on lap1, having to qual again seems fair enough, but without
having to dump and then reload the track data to memory. In fact
that's what I did too many times in N1 due to the pathetic UK manual.

I believe that Shift-R will stay in GPL as it is now. Remember it is
used to put the car back on the track after it has been turned over
and would be "out". <g> I also have a feeling looking at those new
screenshots, (Ed Solheim posted URL at the Apex) that the different
race type will determine whether, or how, the Shift-R will be used.
There will surely be a mode in GPL where if you do "die", that will be
it, end of the entire championship, just like that. <ggg>

I wish I had the puter to run it. Can't wait till exams are over and I
can go buy a Voodoo2 and PII. :)) Running at a friends I am desperate
to break into the 1:10's. <g> I think I have hit two 1:11:14's and one
1:11:04. I don't really care that that's 3 secs down, as I can now
keep control of the car for many laps, hurrah!

Good point and post,

Jon.

Oh, I don't know, Todd.
It would certainly be viable to keep this feature for when racing at a
low level of realism where damage is 'off'.  If not 'Shift + R', then
some other keypress that would just reposition the car on the
track....not necessarily restart the whole race!
