NFS:PU - any tips for the Golden Era?

by Stephen Ferguso » Tue, 27 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Help!  I'm getting killed in the Golden Era and racking up repair bills at a
frightening rate.  The 914s were a walk in the park.  The Carrera 2.7RS was
a bit more intense, but I still managed to win most races.  But the 911
Turbo.  Arg!  I know it has a reputation as being a beast, but I just can't
tame it.  I end up 6th in most races.  Even if I drive cleanly, the top
Turbos run away from me and hide.  Any setup hints?  Tuning?  I'm assuming I
have to get though this tournament to proceed.  By the way, do I have to get
top three in all Golden Era tournaments to proceed?

You do have to get into the top three, yes.

I find fitting slick tyres helps a great deal.
and you may want to fit a performace exhaust, stiff "sway" (anti roll) bar.

Of course all this costs money : -
I found the repair bills on the 944 (of all things!) quite steep, so I
discovered
a way to make extra money in the game:...

If you buy a second hand car and repair it, its market value ends up being
more than the original cost plus the repair bill. You can then immediately
sell it at a profit. The profit margins are pretty slim on (say) a 914, but
you can work your way up to 911 Turbos, RS's, and the 550 Spyder.
Once you begin restoring the 550's - you can slap on a healthy bit of
profit and still sell it.

This was how I managed to afford a 935 over the weekend.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Thanks.  I already stumbled on the "dodgy used-car salesman flips insurance
write-offs for a profit" trick.  It's a good thing there are other drivers
like me in NFS land, because there seems to be a healthy supply of bent
metal!  It does get a little tedious clicking around with the mouse, and I
always have a slight pang of guilt when I see that shiny Porsche, after
repairs, and have to sell it.

The other nice thing is to buy a handful of original 356s during the classic
era and watch the value go up.  I figure by the modern era they should have
increased in value by about 7x.

Slick tyres, suspension, shock and brake upgrade, extra stiff sway bar and a
stage 2 turbo kit should see you walk the field. If you have the time, do
the 9 stage rally cup... it brings big bucks.

The Moby*** is a spectacular used car investment too, even if you don't
repair it (just a little tip for the Modern Era ;-)).

It really is simple. Do you play GPL? If you don't, I'll explain. Just be
very gentle with the throttle, steering, brakes, and just about everything.
And upgrade to the best. Slicks are COMPULSORY. Hope that helps./wl

Yep, I have GPL experience.  I found the Porsches even more sensitive to
drop-throttle oversteer than the mighty GPL cars!

Thanks to everyone for the tips.  Tires were my biggest problem.  Second
biggest problem was a very dirty, sticky potentiometer in my controller.
Fixed both problems, and I am now flying along.  Hey, any driving game that
benefits from a pot cleaning must be a "sim" in my books!

Thanks also for the advice on some of the skidpad tests; once I stopped
treating every pylon as an excuse to pull a handbrake turn, and instead as a
marker for an autocross course, my times came tumbling down.  Now all I want
is a set of "pit tires" (the real skinny bicycle tires they use in F1 pits)
for pulling 360s on the grippier cars.
