GPL: Now go back and try Nascar 2's Watkins Glen

I never drove much on the N2 Watkins Glen, but have become quite
familiar with it over the course of the past few days (WOW!).

Anyways, check out all the changes that have been made in the track
from '67.  I fired up N2, loaded Watkins Glen, and entered practice.
The first thing I did is cruise through turns 1&2 (confused because of
the pit lane changes) then prepare to fly towards turn 3 and WHAM!
Who put that chicane there?  Anyways, restarted, made it around the
chicane and was looking forward to guiding through GPL's turn 5, when
WHAM! again.  Who made that turn so sharp?

Anyhow, check it out.

Also, is it just me or is this game developing something akin to a
religious ferver?  Not complaining mind you...

I think that what we have here is one of those very rare "Doom" moments.
Doom represented a milestone for 3d shooters and showed us what lay ahead.
GPL does the same for racing sims -- IMO of course.

Welcome to the Brave New World :-)

Actually, the chicane is there in GPL, too, although it's a bit
below your in-car view from the backstraight.  If you try an <ahem>
alternative view of the area (say, coming in the opposite direction on
the inside of the loop ;), you will see the chicane.

Watkins Glen has gone through 5 or 6 iterations of track design,
from a street course in the late '40s to the modern NASCAR course.

   Almost like CPR... <really scary>  :)

Before you send me UCE, I know what you're thinking...  Did he complain
to five or six postmasters last month?  Now, you must ask yourself one
question: "Do I feel lucky?"  Well, do you, punk?

Oh btw, just to add that the first Watkins Glen street course wasn't at all
related to the circuit we know today.  It was a totally different layout.
They were driving actually in the city streets !

But AFAIK the track was so dangerous that they stopped the race.  A few
years later, somebody bring back racing there when he made the construction
of a real tracks, who is now known as the Watkins Glen road circuit.

PMFJI, but, if I remember correctly, the chicane that's visible in GPL
was actually used only for slower cars like SCCA club racers, and was
farther down the straight than the present chicane used in the NASCAR
race.  Some of the major access roads are also modeled in GPL if you
take a quick look to the side, including the one on the start/finish
line which was closed off during racing (Wedgewood Road?).  I'm
wondering if The Bog is in there somewhere complete with a burning tour
bus.  The view from the outside of the corner at the end of the main
straight in GPL is great with the car popping over that rise just the
way they used to.

Actually, I don't know if I can find anything wrong with a sim that
lets me race an Eagle as Dan Gurney's team mate :-).
