Zone Latency and AOL

Hi there,

Has anyone else experience latency issues when connecting to the zone thru AOL?
The latency seems to fluctuate a lot, or everyone else' anyway. I'm connecting
 thru a 56K modem and a PII 266 with IE4 (not AOL's IE3 browser) if that makes
any difference...is AOL my problem, or is it just the internet? Any inputs
 would be appreciated.

Run, don't walk away from AOL.  Secondly, a 56K modem isn't going to
help latency, and in fact it will probably be worse than with a 28.8
    connection.

Zone Latency and AOL

So as a completely novice (haven't tried it yet) racer,
does this mean my 13 hops with a 300mps ping really isn't too bad from the
Big rock in the middle of the left ocean?
Aloha, Henry

: >Has anyone else experience latency issues when connecting to the

: Yes - absolutely... it is an AOL problem, not a problem with
: anything in your system. The best latencies I've seen on the
: Zone with AOL are about 425ms (actually, I've seen them in
: the mid-300's, but that never lasts), while I hear other people
: are getting readings at about 120-200ms with no problems.

: If it will make you feel better, you can write a letter to AOL
: screen name "Steve Case" (omit the quotes, the space is
: optional) and complain about it. I did and I will probably
: write at least once a week... Why? I don't know... I don't
: think it will help, but I KNOW it won't help if no one says
: anything about it...

: In the meantime, search for a new internet provider like I've
: been doing... (and don't forget to mention that you are
: shopping around when you write that letter to Steve Case...)

If it's consistently 300ms, it should be at least playable.
I'd be thrilled with a consistent 300ms ping at this point
in time... 13 hops? HA! I scoff at 13 hops! :-) It takes 14
to get from AOL to the Zone!

When you sign on to the Zone and go into the "waiting
room", you'll see a whole list of players and their latencies.
The more colors you see, the better chance you'll have
a good game. Your own latency will be perfect (0ms),
and everyone else will be some degree less than that.
Latency is represented by a series of colored bars.
0 bars means high latency and you don't have a chance
of playing with that person. 4 bars means low latency,
and you should have an excellent game with that person.

If you're on AOL, most people will have 1 bar, some people
will have 2, and a few may have 3, but it won't last. A lot of
people won't have any bars...

If you show people with 3 or 4 bars consistently, you
should be o.k...

- Mike.
