GPL: Help with turn 8 at Mosport

by TigerI » Tue, 06 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm currently trying to learn Mosport in my trusty old Cooper. The best I've
managed so far is a 1:25.67, but I reckon there's more to come.

My reason for believing this is turn 8, for which I just cannot find a reliably
fast technique. My problem is the crest just before the turn. Often I land and
immediately squirt off to the right and onto the grass. I guessed this was me
hitting the bump ***s, so I tried raising the ride height and stiffening the
springs but this still sometimes happens. Mmm, maybe more height needed.

Could any of you GPL types offer some advice as to how best to take this hill?
Do you brake at all on the way up? Maybe lift on the way up? Or perhaps, like
my technique over the Flugplatz, lift off on the way up then floor it just
before the crest, to ensure I don't land nose first, then hit the brakes?

Of course I can try each technique out, but I thought this would make an
interesting wee debate.

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers,

Tiger Ink

Hi,

I stay flat to the floor until *just* before the crest, and then I lift
back to about 70-75% throttle until the car is back on all four wheels
after it. Then I brake for the right-hander afterwards.

I've never tried Mosport in the Cooper but my best in the Lotus is
1m19.90 :-)

The key here is that you *must* be off the brakes just after you go over
the crest.

In other words, if you brake slightly just before the crest, make sure
you then let go the brakes for a moment, wait for the car to steady up
after landing and then brake again.

I think some people can do it without braking at all before the crest,
but I can't!

It's similar to The Loop at Watkin's Glen: if you're braking as you go
over the crest you'll lose it every time.

I don't think you can tell this from watching a replay, either - at
least, I couldn't.

I can't comment on the F1, but the F3's do the same thing.  My *guess*
is that there is still a tinny bit more load on one side of the car then
the other. When you are in the air it translats into a side ways motion.
then, when you land and have traction again, it's exaggerated and throws
you around.

I know I'm right, but someone else can give a better explaination
and/or wording.
