GPL 's internal clock is slow. Laps times are off

by Don Scurlo » Thu, 02 Sep 1999 04:00:00

The Nurburgring was really pissing me off...driving lap after
lap and not getting a lap time because of off track penaltys,
and that's in training mode. What's up with that ?
Anyway, so we started timing laps with a stopwatch and soon
realized that the lap time GPL gave was anywhere from 13-16
seconds a lap longer than a real stopwatch for laps in the 8-10
minute range!
Timing some of the included hotlap replays that came with the
game it seems that the internal clock adds about 1.6 seconds per
minute to the real lap time.
Is this just on my computer or does everyone experience this ?
To check could a few of you guys/gals time the D.Arnao,8:21.93
Nurburgring replay with a stopwatch and post what you get ?
Thanks.

1.1 or 1.0?  The clock is definitely off in 1.1 in too many ways to list.

Never thought of that Marc.  I'm using 1.1
I also should have mentioned that I time 8:08.62 with a watch
on the D.Arnao 8:21.93 replay at the Ring.

8:07.52 with 1.1. For manual timing that's close enough to your result to
be consistent with it.

I ran the replays in both versions of GPL with an ordinary quartz wris***ch
so they are to the nearest second.
Results:
D.Arnao Nurburgring
v 1.0.0.0.    8m21  (just what it's supposed to be!)
v 1.1.0.3.    8m08 (just what you guys got!)

I timed my PB monza lap made in v1.1.0.3 which is supposed to be 1m28.54. It
timed at around 1m26.

Interesting huh?
I sincerely hope this is fixed soon.

Yep, if 1.2 clock does well again it will be like the FF feature being
added to 1.0. I like 1.1 for its FF but I wonder how reliable times
are with all those slomo moments when the fps go low. Perhaps I'll try
the 1.0 exe tonight again. Sometimes really the speed of driving
disappears with 1.1 :(
Also the 'first lap doesn't count' bug is annoying; driving a
fantastic first lap only to notice it is not being timed and you're
20th all of a sudden.

Well that solves the mystery, it's a 1.1 bug, and obviously any laps made
with 1.0 are not comparable with laps made with 1.1
I guess I'm going back to 1.0

I was talking training mode not qualifying.
On the first lap at the Ring, as on most tracks, your starting past the
finish line and your on cold tires anyway,  so I can accept not getting a
first lap time. My complaint is that you can easily not see a lap time for
the next 5 laps after that, if you have the right kind of off track
excursions, and being an incurable kamikazi, I tend to have a lot of them.
There shouldn't be ANY lap time disqualifications or time penaltys in
training mode.

There's a bug in GPL 1.1 that can cause it to fall out of real time.
The bug will be fixed in GPL 1.2.  At the moment, we're trying to nail
down one issue with 1.2.  Once that is cleared up, we'll start down the
road of getting it released.

Hi Randy
Thanks very much for that info. despite the impatience sometimes expressed
in this newsgroup, I for one appreciate all you are doing to get this
fantastic sim right. I also appreciate the s***of info, and won't get all
resentful if it isn't out this weekend :)

Good news! I would even buy that new patch if that's the only way to get at
it. ;-) Thanks a lot for the ongoing support. I really think that GPL will
become one of the great classics of sim racing (if it is not already), and I
sincerely hope that you still make a lot of money with it. (Yes I've read
the posts about the sales figures, but outstanding things often need some
time to get recognized. I really envy you. Researching and developing such a
sim must be even more fun than the optimization and music stuff I am working
on. :)

Great to hear that you're still working on it. But could you also tell
us what the 'one issue' is that you're still dealing with? Is it the
timing problem you're still working on, or something that's not as
important?

Or are you going to surprise us like you did with the 1.1 patch,
"we're still working on one thing" which turned out to be the FF
support? Finally weather conditions? :)))

I think you're getting a little carried away now....let's see if all of the
sweat and toil can get the FFB, better online play and the original GPL
features all working simultaneously...once that happens you can fantasize
about weather effects.

Marc.
