DX8.1 is installed and seems to be allright, latest nvidia drivers are installed
(tried older drivers too).
Anybody got an idea?

I had the same problem. IT was my mistake that caused it so I don't know
if this will help. find and run dxdiag.exe there is a screen there to
test your direct draw and direct 3d. Now to the left of each test button is
a toggle button to enable or disable the direct draw and direct3d.
However the button labels may be counter-intuitive. When the option is
turned on, the button will read 'disable' and when the option is off(and
this would be why F1 2001 can't find a direct x adapter) the button reads
enable. Thus the buttons don't display which toggle option is active but
rather which option will be in force IF you press it. Good luck.
