F1 2002: Automatic Upshifting

by Trev » Mon, 29 Jul 2002 09:27:22

I am going to start using auto upshift in f1 2002, I have always used fully
automatic gears in all sims but I have decided to give this a go, anyone got
any tips (other than practicing 100's of laps which I do anyway) that will
help me.

Also will using this give me quicker laptimes than with fully auto, as I
felt that it was holding me back quite a bit.

TIA

Not sure about that the only thing I know is that i was able to get better
laptimes with manua ***, which leads me to think, that you should be able
to get better laptimes with just autoupshifts than full auto, nope nothing
will help better than practice, practice and consistency is key in most
anything you do!!!

You can almost certainly get better laptimes with full manual, for the
simple reason that most auto shifting algorithms don't seem to
understand that there are times when you need to keep the revs low in
order to get traction.  Also F1 2002's auto-upshift algorithm is not
overrideable, so if you make a mistake and go down one gear too low, you
are stuck until the algorithm thinks it is time to shift up again.
Nothing is better than full manual control.

F1 drivers use auto right?  I don't seem to see them shifting with the
in-car shots.  I like auto-upshifts myself and found it did help with
lap times.

I tried auto but when ever I try to take a corner it would drop down
to 1st gear on turns that don't need to go that low.

Yes, I think most drivers use auto upshift, but control the downshifts
manually, to prevent things like changing down a gear in the middle of a
bend etc.

Try auto upshift only, its much better, but still, its not as good as
manual. Since switching from manual to auto up, my lap times have
plumetted!

are there any ground rules for changing down, should i change down
completely before the turn, how quickly should i for example go from 6th to
2nd etc.  I am totally new to changing gears myself so I am enjoying this
thread a lot.

err... well, just see how you go.
Personally, I start changing down just after I start braking,
say from 7th gear down to 2nd, I tap the paddle 5 times repeatedly,
so the revs stay in the power band for accelerating out of the bend.

Watch a couple of in car laps from a formula 1 race, and listen to
how they downshift. They dont hang about :)

I hate to admit it but I shift totally by ear.  Once I have driven a car
a lap or two, watching the tach or the idiot lights, I know what pitch
represents redline and what pitch represents the bottom of the power
band.  So I do both upshifting and downshifting by ear.  Generally you
want to stay in the power band (keep the lights lit up in modern F1
cars).  The exception is in turns, where in slow and medium speed turns
you don't want to be in the power band until you are in a position where
you can begin straightening the wheel.  So for those types of turns skip
the last downshift and let the engine drop below the powerband in
midturn.  If you have your gears adjusted correctly you should be just
coming back into the power band somewhere near the apex.
