Colin Mcrae patch question

I know that this is an old issue, but I have just recently started to really
enjoy this one.  I was under the impression that the patch would remove the
requirement to have the cd in the drive to play.  I have installed the
patch, but I still need to have the cd in.  Also, I can't tell that anything
is different after I applied the patch.  What is the patch supposed to fix
or change?

I still have to have the cd in the drive with CMR after applying the patch,
but I did notice a big improvement in the FF effects and an improvement in
the overall handling of the car.

The crashes and hangs that happened every now and then(most often on
the crests?). And some controller problems(?)

The patches did remove the CD-R-copy protection, though you still have
to have a CD in the drive.
