Nascar2 Is more than 16 meg Ram any benefit

by Nigel Nichol » Sun, 16 Mar 1997 04:00:00

I read in a post a couple of days ago from Jim Solokoff that
16 meg Ram is the bear minimum for Nascar 2. What advantage
other than longer replays would above 16 meg have.

I run Nascar 2 on the P120 16Meg EDO and will happily add
extra memory if there is a advantage.

Unless you are paging (using virtual memory) during gameplay, there is
absolutely no benefit to more than 16 MB (other than longer replays,
which I definitely like).

There are a variety of reasons to add memory to your machine,
including dirt cheap memory prices right now, but N2 probably isn't
one of the primary reasons...

While it's true that N2 only requires 16mb, if you're going to compete
in the NRO, it is assumed that Nascar AND the TEN software will be
running under Windows 95.  Considering this, I think it's safe to assume
you'll need more than 16mb to avoid those pesky little pauses when
Windows writes/reads from the virtual memory swap file.

I too had a P120, 16mb.  I added ram and it DEFINITELY helped the game
run smoother when launched from Windows.  My recommendation:  bump the
memory up to 32mb, overclock the cpu to 133 and the bus speed to 66mhz.
Don't quote me on the overclocking tho', that's a decision you need to
make yourself.  You'll find info at this URL:

hope it helps,

My machine P133-overclocked to 166--83mhz bus speed runs n2 much better
with only 16 meg memory. Can run everything on--all cars in front--and
min frame rate is 25. With 32 meg Things shut down at several tracks--ie
martinsville. I assume its because of the 16 bit cars vs 8 bit. Any way
to get only 8bit cars with 32 meg ram. would be nice for replays.

I'll presume you've got a Rendition card, in which case you are for
the moment better off with 16 MB, as it will use the 4-bit cars
instead of the 8-bit cars, which are a good deal faster... I believe
that's going to be addressed by the patch (adding a command line
option to force 4-bit cars, regardless of memory available), so you'll
be able to use the fast cars and get a long replay. (I didn't want to
needlessly confuse the issue with this special case in my previous
post...)

Thanks much Jim. I appreciate the response. Oh, and by the way I love
the game. Bugs or not its great!
