F1 2001 online experiences

I tried F1 2001 online a couple of times with different results..
The host was on cable, so were and most of the other drivers, total
number of drivers was 4 to 6.
Here are some of the problems we encountered:

- Cars starting at the same spot. This happened both during training
and race sessions. Quite an annoying bug. Simply bad programming I
think. I qualified 3rd, another guy qualified 2nd, yet at the start of
the race we started at -exactly- the same spot.
Even weirder, no crash occured between us when the lights went out, we
could both drive on.

- The worst bug, this happened -often- to each of us.
While driving, the camera suddenly jumps to an outside tv-view cam.
You can still control your car, but ofcourse with a tv cam it's
impossible to stay on the road. A couple of seconds after that you are
being dropped back to the chatroom.

There is -no- logical reason for this.. it seems to happen randomly,
during training, qualify, and even during the race itself..

Apart from these bugs, the racing itself was quite good. Good
collission detection, hardly any warping, it was good fun at moments.

I can't imagine what we would have heard if this had happened in F1RC ...

What do you mean? My F1RC online experiences were even worse, though I
tried it only out-of-the-box, and never tried that F1RC relay
utility.. I had uninstalled F1RC allready.
The problems I mentioned in F1 2001 are b-a-d and hinder any serious
online competition. Now it's only good enough for some fun pickup
races.

As with the rest of F1 2001, the basics of the code all allright, but
there are still so many bugs left.. bring on F1 2002! (even better
would be a patch, but I seriously doubt we will get a patch from EA
that solves the main problems.. not EA's style, instead they released
the patched game as the 2002 version :)

Hi Andre,

You're experiences are similar to mine. Some of the races I've had no idea
what the host is on but it's usually been pretty solid. Not as good as
Papy's online model, probably not good enough for 56k modem users...

I had the TV cam jump bug just once. I think it was caused by someone
joining the race with the same car as me (#6 BMW Williams). All the other
races I've been the only guy running that car and haven't had a repeat of
the bug yet.

Even so, *thumbs up*

I read that the starting grid problem is solved in ver 1.045.
We will try if you can use 1.045 NO_CD for better mp with our europian
version.
I found it at http://www.f12001.racesim.net/ .

Well, tried it, with three people in total, all of us using the new
exe. We didn't have starting grid problem this time, but to be fair,
we only had a long practice session and one race, so I can't say for
sure the problem is gone now.

We had an awfull lot of disco's though - maybe a connection problem
(I'm on cable and I my connection has hickups sometimes, bad for
online racing, for important races I switch to my trusty 56k6 modem :)
or maybe it was because of the new exe file.. more testing needed.

We had a very nice race yesterday though, all three of us were racing
with the pacecar :D Physics of the Mercedes felt great, very fun to
drive! F1 2001 should be heaven for the addon builders..
I had same very close door-to-door racing with someone, side by side
through the last chicane at Suzuka, without any weird warping or
collision detection problems. Some parts of the netcode seems very
good..
