Take it for what it is.  I lifted the following off of Sierra's message
area on AOL:

 Subj:  Re:N2 Anti-Aliasing?
 Date:  97-02-10 12:35:20 EST

Has anyone heard if Anti-Aliasing might be added in a coming N2
version/update?  Is it something Sierra might be able to add with a
patch that we could down-load?
<<<

We currently have no plans to add anti-aliasing to NASCAR 2.

What a disapointment....... What good is the rendition enhancment when
it really only runs marginally quicker in " enhanced mode" and the
thing still has substantial Jaggies?   Look at Quake for goodness
sake.  I guess ICR2  really sets such a high standard, it raises the
question" Is ICR2 as good as it gets? "
I was hoping that ICR2 was an above average baseline, not the
highest possible quality. Unfortunately I think N2 is the baseline,
and Mike at Papyrus tells us that is the way it will stay.
Will the NRO make the difference? Man, just think about running
n2 cars at the same quality as ICR2  in Indyfast mode (I was getting
over 25 fps with my p90.)
Will any corporation ever put together an industry changing product?
ie: ICR2 graphics, N2 configurability with Hawai type competition, GP2
quality physics model, with CONTINUING refinements like Quake.
Thinking about what could be, is enough to drive a man to drink.  Or
wishing I had away to do it myself, I would be as rich as John Romero,
and I would have just as many Ferrari's.

It's no secret that the guy who did the Rendition work (whose name
escapes me at this time) left Papyrus after ICR2 for a hardware
company.  He did some consulting on N2, but as everyone can see it was
obviously quite limited.  As far as Rendition Ready games go, N2 is a
huge disappointment.

This is terribly disapointing.  I bought NR2 based on the look of IRC2
for the
Rendition card and was surprised to find it (NR2) wasn't ani-aliased.
Fix the few bugs this games has, and clean up the graphics and this
already great
game would be outstanding.  Papy has always cared about this level of
quality,
please try to keep it up.

I wouldn't buy a Rendition card if all you wanted was Nascar2.  Quake
is pretty good, but I never use it anymore since all I play is
QuakeWorld.  Still, for the money (about $170 to $200), it's the best
bang for the buck upgrade I've seen.  If you have a good 2D card
already, one of the add on 3Dfx cards might be a good solution.  The
OpenGL port of Quake (the 3Dfx cards are the only consumer level cards
that can handle it) is absolutely breathtaking and includes shadows,
reflections, transparent water, round *** drops, etc.

Another company to talk to about a verite upgrade is Rendition. Give them some
feedback. They could do the upgrade themselves as they have with several other
products already.

It would be a shame to not bring N2 up to ICR2 standards of gfx quality. I
mean it's a newer genreration and one would expect equal or better. And N2
could still use a little performance boost still. But to those non-verite
owners the Verite still makes a big difference as is, don't read into it
thinking the verite patch is total garbage, it's just not as great as it can
be.

and also, from now on, will you give it to us for free?

seriously, i think the anti-aliasing would be nice, and it does have it's
'features', but i wouldnt consider the improvements in general capabilities
and the texture mapping anything to turn my nose up at.  i personally, prefer
texture mapping to anti-aliasing....

Wow Eric! Doing a little beating on the Papyrus boys!
I'm very proud of you!
N2 rendition has nothing on its parent ICR2!

I dunno about anyone else, but I don't give a rat ***about a NASCAR 2
patch (well, maybe not that far, I WOULD like to see one) if they put that much
more effort into "Grand Prix"...I hope that they make Grand Prix the pinnicle
of driving games, and it looks like they will; all-new 3-d engine, which is
unique in history, hopefully killer Rendition implementation, and, yes, I hope
a thirst for 32mb.  I don't have that much myself, but I don't want them to
have to cut corners just to support a 16mb machine.  Make it the game they
won't HAVE to replace until December 1998!
