N99 :: Impressions, and how are your lap times?

by John Hilsm » Thu, 31 Dec 1998 04:00:00

I installed N1999 on my system, then bought an older PCI Voodoo I card
(Intergraph Intense 3d for any who care) for my P233MMX 48MB RAM
system.  I run the Win 3dfx version and all is well, I have most of my
graphics turned to "Auto", and unless we are under caution and I've
got a lot of cars in front of me, they all stay on.  Under caution
though, I lose most if not all of them: horizon, clouds, grass,
pavement, walls, stands, car textures.  Not a really big deal to me,
they come back within a lap or two (once the pack spreads a little),
and I oughtn't be under yellow anyway ;)

I really like the way the car drives, it 'feels' better than N2.  For
N2, I usually used the 'Ace' settings, any changes I made seemed to
make little difference, or if they did it was usually for the worst.
Ok, so I'm no crew chief.  Quit laughing!  :).  I seemed to do ok with
'em, I ran at 98% and was always faster than the AI, so I was content.

So I start a race in N99, set to sim mode with arcade damage,
competition at 97%, load the Ace settings, and found out I couldn't
keep up.  I'd literally watch Jeff Gordon go by me and then get small
in the distance.   WTF?!?  Nope, ain't gonna stand for *that*.   The
gauntlet has been thrown...

A lot of tweaking later, and things are much better.  Here's my top
lap the game shows for the 4 tracks I've been working on:

Dega            196.798
Rockingham      150.270
Las Vegas       165.878
Atlanta         189.027

So what kind of times are you guys running?  Am I a driver, or just a
legend in my own mind? :)  What do you think of N99?

My email is jhilsman,  my server is negia.net.  I hope
lightning strikes the next idiot to send me a mass email.

I run ~20 laps, (usually) stiffen the shocks, and look at the tire
temps.  The inner camber usually needs a click or 3.  Try ~20 more
(1/4 to 1/2 tank of gas) to see how those changes do, and work from
there.  What do you do to get more heat in the LF tire?  LR?
Crossweight?

Here's what I've got for Rockingham (lap of 150.270)
Ace settings, then changed:
Pressure:
49      51
50      50
Shocks:
90      75
85      85
Camber:
+.20    -2.40

Las Vegas (lap of 165.878)
Ace settings, then changed:
Pressure:
49      49
50      51
Shocks:
75      95
85      90
4th gear: 3.80
F/R Weight:
51.0%
Cross:
49.5%

>Well at `dega I am averaging about 192 . How you getting the extra 4 MPH ?

These are the settings I use (modified from Ace):
Pressure:
60      60
59      60
Camber:
+.20    -2.20
4th: 3.40
Shocks:
100%    95%
90%     90%
Weight:
F/R: 45.7%
Cross: 50%

The tire temps aren't even, but it runs faster.  Also, it might be a
little easier on the motor to run 4th at 3.50, but I am trying to get
all the power I can.  I've found the line through the curve and
exiting with a lot of speed makes a big difference in my lap times,
but I just can't always hit that groove..
A friend of mine says he wears the tires too fast unless he drops some
pressure, but I'm not sure what he does with his weights, so that
might make a difference.  I go around the curves with the tires
singing, not fully squealling but just faintly, and I haven't had any
problem with wear thus far.  What pressure are you running?

sorry wrong button.
If you want to go faster at tally - SOFTEN your rear shocks, as the air
pushes down the rear of the car it pushes the spoiler out of the wind -
viola less drag.

turn 3
my laps are around 49.5 ( I don't play much and just got a wheel, so I've
gotten worse)
