N4 connection timed out...

by Bob Thurma » Sat, 28 Apr 2001 02:19:26

I tried the first patch.
Tried the update.
No file names were changed.
No problems logging onto Sierra.Com and getting onto any arena.
I see pings on some games, but not others.
The ping button has never done anything when pressed.
I am attempting to log onto games that are NOT password required.
I have tried "detect by other..."
I've tried every combo of "configure" and "connect via:" but I gave never
been able to connect to anything.

I've played online games before and have never had so much trouble
attempting to get a connection. Is there a very detailed step by step
guide for setting up N4 for online somewhere?

I have a DiamondSupra external modem on Com2.

try pinging the connection you are hosting to...

also check what speed your ISP will let you run at, if they don't allow
56kbps... well I'd change! I have no troubles.. but am on a cable modem
so *COULD* explain why I get good pings... well recommended in the UK as
it's just 20 a month now :) through NTL (I hope NTL reads this.. I'll
expect the cheques coming through in 14 days...)

The right-click popup help or the readme11.txt explain the details.  Sounds
like you need to make sure you're picking the correct TCP/IP device in the
sierra.com login's "Connect Via" list (it's different than the Connect Via
list on the main multiplayer screen).  Turn on the "Find network addresses
another way option", go back to multiplayer, click the sierra.com logo, and
before clicking OK to log in, look above your UserID and Password and pick
the TCP/IP address that corresponds to your Internet connection.

Yet another re-install and patch solved the problems.
I have my CD id memorized !

Don't most people suggest *lowering* your connect speed?  Like 38400 max?

I'd run 28.8 max.  Slower is better if it stops the re-trains.

Yep, and most people are correct.. I have a 56k6 modem but I set it to
28k8 for a -stable- connection.
