Nascar help?

by ZZ » Sun, 26 Oct 2003 23:46:11

I need some help. I installed N2k3 to another pc and created a new user ID.
Now when I log on with my primary ID, I get a message that some is already
logged on with my CD key. The other PC isn't even on.
What do I have to do?

Thx

1) What happens when you try to do the same thing using your primary
machine, and using your original user ID?

2) Is this for the server you're trying to setup?

I am using my primary machine when I get that message.

The server I'm trying to setup is the machine I just installed N2K3 on. I
made the new ID from that machine. I logged off and the machine is sitting
idle, nothing is running. I try to log on from my primary racing machine and
get the message that someone is already logged on with my CD key.

OK. Oddness. I went out cycling around for 2 hours. Now I can can log on
with my primary machine and primary ID. It must take some time for Sierra to
figure out that each ID has logged out.

Hey John, If I use Demons to start my server with my alternate Sierra ID and
CD key, when I try to log on with my primary Sierra ID to race, I wonder if
I'll get the same message?

Forgive the newbie questions, I'm new to this. I'll be fiddling with this
tonight and tomorow, for fun? ;-)

Well, the CD key means nothing to the server code, since nobody can
ban your server. It's just a mechanism Sierra uses to annoy us and
otherwise protect their intellectual property.  :)

The server must have it's own sierra ID and sierra password.  The CD
does not have to be in the drive when running a dedicated server.

DeMONS has nothing to do with and cannot resolve that error message
about your CD key already being in use.  That's a sierra thing and
happens sometimes when you log off and then log right back on. It's
never happened to me, but I've seen it happen to others. If it
happens a lot to your server machine, DeMONS can be problematic since
the the sim does not shutdown when it encounters a log-in problem. It
just sits there waiting for a human to click OK or CANCEL.  If the
sim launches, DeMONS assumes everything is okay, and there's really
no way to determine otherwise that I know of.  Lastly, DeMONS lets
the sim run one race, then lets it shutdown before starting the next
race.  The delay between shutdown and startup for the next race can
be anywhere from 15 seconds to 60 minutes (user-definable at 1-
minute, quarter hour, half hour, or toip-of-the-hour).

No problem. :)

Something else used to do that as well.  Battle.net, maybe?  I seem to remember
getting locked out after being discoed before..

I'm not John, but no you won't.  As long as you have an ID for the server, and
a different ID for your client, you'll be ok.

I'd go so far, to add to John's advice, to say that the CD key means nothing
when serving period. You need the CD key to install the software the first
time, but if you're running the install strictly as a server, you never need
the CD or CD key again so far as I know. The CD key is strictly for the
client side in NR2003, when dealing with Sierra anyway. And as John
correctly pointed out, to make sure that you don't get more than one
client's use out of a CD at any one time when using Sierra.

ID's on the other hand, can take a little bit to clear if the connection to
Sierra is interrupted or shakey. I've had times where I was booted from a
race (by the connection timing out, not being ejected) and couldn't log back
in for a few minutes because of the dreaded 'ID already in use' junk.
