F1 2002 Pauses

I'm having an odd problem with F1 2002.  Frequently it freezes for about
half a second or so, then continues.  Seems to happen mostly when
shifting.  This does not happen with F1 2001, or any other games for
that matter.  Also it is happening more often with my new GF4 Ti4200
than with the Radeon that I had before.  I tried turning down audio
acceleration, that did not change anything.  I also tried both half rate
and high rate physics, the problem was still there either way.  Win 98,
900 mhz Celeron, 256 meg RAM, SB Live 5.1.  Any ideas?

I had a similar problem. It turned out to be a combination of Anti Virus
software and Anti Trojan software. I pull my cat5 lead from my modem,
disable my AV and AT software and no more problems.

My AV software is NOD32 and my AT software is Trojanhunter. These programs
don't cause any problems with any other software/games

Could be background programs regularly taking a CPU time slice, or could be
AGP port related when textures are swapped.  Make sure all other programs
are closed and make sure your AGP appeture is 128MB (in your case, half your
RAM) and in 4X Turbo mode.

There have been a few discussions about this at the High Gear Forums.
(Search for "hiccups" or "stutters".) A few things that seem to
greatly reduce, but maybe not completely eliminate the problem are:

1. Reducing the speech content from high.

2. Increasing the maximum number of simultaneously playable sounds in
your .plr file from 12 to something like 15.

3. Replacing your f1-2002.exe with the no-cd version.

F1 2002 Pauses

I had already reduced speech content to low, and am already using the
no-cd version.  I increased number of sounds to 32 (the max my card
allows) and that improved the situation but did not eliminate it.  Then
I set sound detail to 0, since that's what it was in my F1 2001 player
file, and that improved it a little more.  I think this is probably just
a bus contention issue.  With F1 2001, and with F1 2002 prior to
changing my video card, I was using high detail for the vehicles and low
detail lighting.  Since changing my video card I was able to set both of
those to full in F1 2002 without going into the red, so I have been
running it that way.  That means more data being pushed across my anemic
100 mhz bus, so that is probably contributing to the problem.  I guess I
just need to fiddle around some more to find the optimum combination of
sound detail and graphics detail that my system can handle.

Thanks for the help,
Hal
