Indycar II - still fantastic thrills

Last night I just couldn't resist ... so I fired up the Rendition version of
Indycar II for the first time since about a year. Some fizzling around with
my SBLive to get it to work in DOS (the Rendition version won't work in W98
for me), but heck, I succeeded.

Started up Indycar II, calibrated my steering wheel (after I started up
again with the mouse disabled, 'cause when assigning controls, it would
immediatly assign the mouse).

Started up the enhanced version of Michigan, full damage on, alt-m for the
mirrors, and off I went. Wow. This sim still gives me an undescribable
thrill. Running past those walls, knowing you can't even scratch them
because your tire will die instantly, it's a nice change from the
wham-banging of Nascar 3 and the old, washed-out (though beautiful)
sceneries of GPL. And yes, my hands were getting wet.

Of course, in the race I crashed out in lap 42 because about 10 cars decided
to go for a full stop on the two-mile oval. But hey, even this reminded me
of the good old days :-)

I now know again why I still have that old Rendition V1000 as my main
videocard. Now off to Elkhart Lake!

i found a month or so ago that i could now feel what the car was doing in
icr2, i could recieve the data the sim was giving me so much better, guess
why? because of gpl.

Except now I keep trying to drive the ICR2 and NASCAR2 road courses like in
GPL, sawing madly away at the wheel, sucking my breath through my teeth, and
leaning my body into the corners.  Then I settle down, chill out and watch
my lap times drop by two seconds!  Of course, it looks great in the replays
to see the stocker weaving and bobbling through the Esses at the Glen.

So can I conclude from your comments that a V1000 will do a decent job
running GPL?

The video and cpu demands of ICR2 are WAAAAAY below those of GPL.
With a 2nd gen Rendition card, I could get frame rates in the high 20's
in gpl, but that was with a Pentium 200mmx o/c'd to 225.  GPL really
REALLY only begins to shine when you get consistant frame rates of at or
very near 36fps.

So what should I expect from a PII-300 with a Voodoo3 2000 and 128MB?

You will probably have to adjust a few graphic options, but you
"should" be able to get real close to the magic 36fps after the start of
a race.  A good combo.  GPL is one of the few sims that depends MORE on
the CPU than the Vidcard for the graphic smoothness.

After years of trying to come to terms with CPR I finally threw the CD in
the round file to prevent my ever trying to put it back on my hard drive.

About a year ago I picked up ICR2 for the first time, to convert tracks.
I've been having a ball with it ever since.

Wow, must be something in the air! I, too loaded up ICR2 the other night
after a year of not playing. This was such a great driving sim...and
still is. I downloaded the 2k carset from SRO the Tom something or other
set. They did a fantistic job with the new carshapes! Much better
looking cars than the original game IMHO. It,s like having a new sim.
Michigan is still that white nuckler of a race.....love changing the
anti-rollbars while driving....until a new CART sim is available, ICR2
stays on my hardrive...

It absolutely doesn't, sadly. For GPL I use the 12mb Voodoo2 that
accompanies my V1000. The Voodoo2 *does* a decent job running GPL, IMHO.

I haven't played Indycar Racing 2 in years, but I have probably spent
more man hours on it than most of the other sims in my collection,
excluding Grand Prix Legends and Nascar Racing 3.

I saw a copy of it on sale in Macro for 9.99 the other week, so I may
buy it again soon if I can still find it, especially considering how a
new CART title doesn't seem likely in the near future - especially not
from Papyrus.

I used to own both Nascar Racing 1 and Indycar Racing 2. They were
very similar titles, except for the fact that you drove different cars
and on different tracks. Downloading the track converter was one of
the best things I've done for a simulator. It's a shame that driving
Indycars on the Nascar version of Talledega was such a difficult thing
to do. I expected it to be an awesome ride, considering the high end
speeds of those babies...

I've played ICR2 just as much as GPL, if not more, for as long as I've had the
game.  It's fun, and besides, who doesn't like a realistic CART sim?  Oh yeah,
I also finally got into editing ICR2 stuff.  So, if you're picking up ICR2 for
the first time in a long while,

a) Join C***( http://www.racesimcentral.net/)
and the IIRS ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/ )
and do a little bit of offline racing, competing for a championship.  Always
fun.  :)

b) Get my newest stuff for ICR2 please!  I've gotten rid of the ugly gray smoke
and made some great new smoke.  I've edited the engine sound.  Etc. etc.  goto
http://www.racesimcentral.net/ and get some of the utilites.  I'm sure you'll like
them.  :)  I'll be adding a new crash sound soon also.

Right on, Dan!  Beginners and speedsters alike should take a look at
C***and IIRS.  Offline racing is loads of fun, and easy when you get
a handle on it.  The folks involved are really friendly, and plenty
helpful too, if you're having any difficulties.  A great way to keep
ICR2 alive, which despite its little bugs stands up better than any
5-year old game that I can think of.
