Modem Trouble

by SpeedFree » Fri, 04 Jun 1999 04:00:00

My modem blew up in a storm. It was a Diamond Supra 336i internal ISA card.
I thought it was rather good but lots of people said a PCI modem is better
than
ISA so i went out and bought a Motorola SM56 V.90 56k PCI card...... now my
online GPL performance is worse than before! My old modem gave me a
steady 36fps in GPL but now it drops as low as 29fps! :-( And the screen
update seems to "stutter" more.

I am in the UK, my pc is a P2 233 with a GA686LX gigabyte motherboard.
I have never tried the USB port so i dont know if it works or not!

Can anyone recommend a good GPL modem that is available in the UK?
I'd prefer an ISA or PCI card, but will consider USB... (I gotta try it
sometime!)

It seems the card I bought is a Winmodem, and I don't want to make the same
mistake again......

If it gives you the option, turn off "Share IRQ with another device" or
similar.

Due to PCI steering, PCI cards can share the same IRQ.  However, modem
communications are kind of critical, and this sharing may be causing
your problem?
