When I try to connect to a network I get an error message that says
"10054:error detected on network device"

Anyone got an idea what this means.
Everything else works on my network.

Assuming you are on cable or DSL, when you go to Multiplayer, click on
Configure at the bottom of the screen.  Then select "Find network addresses
a different way"
