You can use cable/dsl for hosting a game, course the more bandwidth
available, the more clients can join. I host mine on a cable modem, but set
it to 10 clients. When i used 15 clients (example from papy's server.txt) i
noticed the pings would spike when maxd w/ clients.
A dedicated server does not need to be as powerful as a normal ***
machine since it is only crunching numbers. in fact, when you choose the
dedicated server option, it doesnt even load 3d drivers. My dedicated server
is a celery 400, 128mb ram, 6.5gb hd & 3com nic. Once the dual amds are out,
i will build a new *** machine built on that platform & move my current
p3 800, 384mb ram over to win2k server & have it become a dedicated server.
I am also waiting for Sprint ION to get installed, according to the tests
they ran on my line, the can guarantee 2mb down/800k up, so that should
really allow me to increase the clients.
