Hi,
    I had some problems like this with the demo and Bethesda sent me
these instructions.

Hope they help!
John

Please use the following set-up for WIN 95 and the game should run.

Right click on your BURNOUT short-cut icon. Select PROPERTIES - Under
memory
set every EMS to NONE, XMS and CONVENTION to AUTO, SET DPMI to 16384. Set
Initial Environment to 2048

Also under its "Properties" set:

 - Do not allow screensaver
 - Always Suspend in background
 - Usage: Full Screen
 - Mouse Exclusive

Make sure that you UNCHECK CLOSE ON EXIT.
Make sure that you UNCHECK SUGGEST DOS MODE IF NECESSARY.

DO NOT attemp to run the game form the AUTORUN.

Have a small 2 line CONFIG.SYS on your C root directory which WIN 95
reads
on start up.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
FILES=50
BUFFERS=35

If your problems still persis - trying configuring for NOSOUND and NOMIDI
and
see is that solves your problem.Then we know that you have a sound card
conflict
and I can work to get that working.

If you have more than 16MB of RAM try setting the DPMI memory either to
AUTO
or to the amount of installed RAM you have on your system.

BURNOUT freezes, crashes, or locks up...

I need help, it does all these things at different points in the game.  I may
just take it back if I keep having problems.  I've turned my screen saver off
and everything.  I just don' know what the problem is.  Also, while it is
loading, it tells me "can't find engine mode: 404 not found" or something like
this.  Any ideas?

I have a lot of problems with lockups occuring when trying to modify my
engine "too much" in a single session.

BURNOUT freezes, crashes, or locks up...

I found it very odd that this game is dos based, and uses a dos
extender, while the rest of the planet uses Win95 API's now.

BTW: I downloaded the demo and set dos mode properties as per
Bethesda's recommendation and the game just executes, display's
the 3DFX logo screen, then shutsdown with the message:
"Burnout terminated successfully".

Both drivers are the latest version, checked them
last friday. Using DirectX 5 too.

They must be writing directly to the hardware,
which means they would have to provide drivers
for every 3D card made, along with sound drivers
for all 16-bit sound cards.

I suspect the problems lay in how dos games use
memory. Remember playing around with umb's and
xms/ems stuff years ago?

Regards,

Bill Valentine
