F12002 & GTR2000 - Run in compatiblity mode?

by santan » Thu, 30 Jan 2003 20:33:50

Let me try again.
I've been playing these 2 games in Windows 98SE without any problems. But
after I installed Win XP and re-install both F12002 & GTR 2002, I keep
getting kicked to the desktop after finishing a race or leaving a race
circuit. Does these 2 games run normally in WIN XP or should I run in
Windows Compatibility mode?

Thank you.

My system :
Athlon XP 1600
DDR 512mb
Shuttle Mainboard
Geforce 4 Ti4200 128mb
SoundBlaster Live
WinXP Professional
DirectX 8.1

I never have problems like this with these games.  I would look at the
drivers for your video first.  Make sure you have downloaded and installed
the latest drivers for your card.  And there are different drivers for WinXP
than Win98 just in case you are trying to use the same ones.

After that, make sure your sound card drivers are the latest release also.

Other than those, I can't think of anything except trying to run in a
different mode, i.e. 16 bit instead of 32 bit color, or vice-versa

You say you had it running perfectly in Win 98...

Then you changed to Win XP.

Vital things to look for are graphic card drivers....98 and XP use different
versions of the same version numbers.

e.g  ..... 41.09's in Win 98/Me flavour will taste different in XP
flavour...

Secondly the guy above is right....soundcard drivers from 98 to XP will
influence as all GPL ***s will confirm :)

It is nothing major wrong you can sleep easy, just a matter of elimination.

Thanks for replying Glen & Aidee.
Yes, I'm aware of the driver issue that you mentioned. Right now I'm using
the 41.09 WinXP driver. Haven't checked the sound card drivers tho. Will
check it and feedback here.
 Best regards.

Just to confirm both run perfectly in XP...and that it is most likely a
video driver issue.

One other thing to consider is the ammount of RAM.  Running 512mb
of ram in XP is similar to running 128 in win9x.  You may be running out of
resources due to the increased footprint of xp.  Does anyone know if
utilities like Enditall2 run with xp?  Make sure you shut down as many
processes as possible and perhaps try to scrounge up at least another 256mb
of RAM.

Did you 'upgrade' or clean install XP?

If you did a dirty install over Windows 98, this your never-ending run of
problems is just beginning...

I have had no problems doing that...but then my system was working properly
before the upgrade...

Are you running it from an account with administrator privileges?  For some
reason a lot of games require this.

I'm running those games in XP with 384 meg of RAM with no problems.  Also
there is no need for Enditall2 with XP.  You seldom need to shut things down
in XP, and when you do it can easily be done from the task manager, which is
much more comprehensive than the one in Win9x.

FWIW, the 30.82 nvidia drivers have provided me with the best stability and
performance over the last few months.  Tried later version but always went
back.  Upgrading to DX9 shouldn't hurt, it actually improve my Combat Flight
Sim 3 performance and had no negative impact on any games.

AMD 1600+
ECS K7S5A
512 MB RAM
GF4 Ti 4400
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Win XP - SP1
DX9

It was a clean install of XP after formatting the hard disk.

I've updated my nvidia drivers from 41.09 to 42.70. My SBLive card are also
using the latest drivers.
Still the same problem. Will try to uninstall and reinstall the games again.

I have not upgraded from Win98 to WinXP myself, I have always reformatted
etc., But from all the people I have heard comment on this, it seems that
WinXP does a great job when upgrading from Win98.  Most people reported no
problems at all when upgrading.  That is a huge change from previous
versions though.
