Running ICR2 in SVGA mode

This is a post regarding running ICR2 in SVGA mode

My system comprises :
Clone P100
16MB RAM
1GB HD
Soundblaster Pro 2
Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM 1MB graphics card
Running Windows 95 (but boot to DOS for ICR2)
Chronically bad joystick (I prefer using the keyboard anyway)

My problem is that ICR2 runs fine and dandy in VGA mode but when I run in
SVGA all the extras turn themselves off.  Track becomes smooth, no tyre wear
markings, no Grandstand, No grass texture etc, etc...  If I turn all these on
manually the game crawls and becomes unplayable.

I know a quite a bit about PC setups and until ICR2 I have never had any
problems running PC games and simulations.

Any hints or explanations greatly appreciated

Basically, I don't think there is a great deal you can do - there may be
some mileage in trying out the UNIVBE driver, but this just makes things
worse on my machine.

ICR2 in SVGA just requires buckets of CPU power, and even P100 & P120's
don't seem to be enough.

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi,

You didn't mention whether your system is a PCI or not, I would
presume that all pentiums are PCI but if not, this would definitely be
a cause of slowdown as well as if the video card is not PCI or VLB.

Also, the DRAM card is notably slower than the VRAM card. Does UNIVBE
make any difference if it is used or not?

What other simulations have you run in SVGA that work okay?

That's about all I can think of,
Dave.

On my mates reasonable P-75 ICR2 runs brilliantly in SVGA mode, I think he set all the options (graphics) on
manually but it all runs VERY smoothly.

His Graphics card is somthing that I have never heard of before and I presume it's ***but I just cannot imagine
why it runs ***on yours.

Are you running the UNIVBE driver? It's supposed to make the game run faster in SVGA.

Diamond's Stealth 64 DRAM cards are based at least for Trio64, Vision864
and Vision868 chipsets. I have  a noname Vision868 based video card,
with 2 MB DRAM.

Now: Indycar uses UNIVBE-drivers and those do support all mentioned
S3-chips. In my 486dx4-120 with S3-Vision868 card ICR2 is fully playable
in SVGA-mode (640x480?). Only asphalt texture is off, grass
and grand stand texture mappings are in AUTO-mode, and they tend to
flicker back and forth. Depending number of cars nearby my car. When
practising alone, only most complex structures are flickered off. Frame
rate is set to max 27, min 25!

If you can not play decently with P100 and  some 64-bit S3-chip ICR2, I
would blaim UNIVBE-drivers. Looks like they do *support* new S3-chips,
but drivers are not fully optimized. Mail to Papyrus, and ask them 'How
do I remove UNIVBE-driver?'.

S3's ftp-site (at bbs.s3.com) provides at least for 928, 864, 868, 964
and 986 based card excellent VESA 2.0 compliant driver. S3vbe20 is FAST,
check it out with Duke Nukem 3d! And I would like to use this, chipset
specific driver with ICR2. But ICR2's UNIVBE is always loaded in
memory...

SciTech has (URL escapes now..) 3 week trial for 5.1A version, I
got it from some magazines cdrom. This is noticeably faster than
previous versions (I do not know, what version ICR 2 uses). Load this
*before* lauching ICR2, so the games univbe is not loaded. Might help
you here!

If one has DRAM-based card, then it is. At least I'm quite satisfied
with mine, especially with games in 640x480 modes. Refresh rates are not
that bad in 640x480 modes, so cards memory does not ***up. Also,
games tend to use 256 colors, so there's plenty of playing room with
2 MB.
