Can't run because an error message says my 3DFX board "failed".
The board is a Pure 3D II and DirectX5.2 and v1.09 patch are loaded as
well as the latest P3DII drivers.
Any suggestions?

Only the obvious "make sure everything is setup properly".
Part of this for F1RS is to make sure Glide.dll (in addition
to Glide2x.dll) is in your system directory. Even though
F1RS uses Glide 2.4x it looks for the older Glide.dll...

Here is part of an old word document I got from Ubisoft
in January which explains it better:

Question:

The game does not detect my 3DFX card, and will only allow a Direct 3D
install.

Answer:

You're probably using the 3DFX reference drivers or the very new
Orchid ones. On installing these, a couple of files are removed from
your windows/system directory. Some software specifically uses these
files to recognise the existence of a 3DFX card (including F1). The
only real solution is to put the files back in - this will not cause any
problems or degrade the performance of the newer drivers, but will
improve compatibility.

The missing files are

glide.dll
sst1init.dll

If you have these files, put them back into your windows/system
directory. If not, you can obtain them from
http://www.ubisoft.co.uk/f1rs.zip

Good luck!

Start the game just by running the f1voo.exe file where you installed the
program. The shortcut on the start menu starts runs the game through the
install program, which checks for a valid Voodoo card.

I have the Pure 3DII with a Matrox G100 8MB and it works fine.  At first the
shipping drivers didn't recognize in the display properties menu.  I never
tried the F1RS at that time.  I installed the latest drivers from Canopus
and everything works fine.  This software is great with the Hyper
Stimulator.
