Hadn't tried NASCAR games before but loaded Nascar 4 to check it out.
WTF.... where's the fun?! I became mesmerised and fell asleep while going
round 'n round 'n round, with the occasional twitch of the joystick to
change the line on the bends. I found one track that had a few extra bends,
only to discover why all the tracks are ovals, because the cars handle like
shit!

Must be missing something here...............

How about the NASCAR guys pointing out what's fun about it then?

I'm not saying it isn't fun, just hoping some finer points can be made.
There must be a list 10 miles long why it IS fun!!!  :-)

I'm just getting into racing on the PC, so I'm no expert.
From what I've seen (from an XBOX Nascar game) it "sounds" really cool in
5.1 surround.  Love that engine sound and you can really hear/feel those
cars around you.

Cockpit view is sweat..

More guys...

Discussions about how boring this or that series is or how pointless
one or another is, is kind of, well, pointless.  Everyone has their
own reasons for watching/simming their favorite racing series. It's
kinda like motorcycles.

Harleys are great for people that can afford them, and Jap bikes are
great for people that want what those bikes have to offer. To be
honest, 99% of the motorcycles made today are equally reliable, and
are equally expensive within their respective nomenclatures.  In the
end, you buy what you want because of what you want to believe.

Personally, I don't really care if someone wants to ride a Jap bike
or doesn't like Nascar racing, and no amount of arguing about it is
likely to change their minds.

I don't remember who started the thread, but it's a tired, old
argument that is pretty much just a troll attempt to see how many
Nascar fans he can stir up.

Honestly, if we have to explain the reason someone else should like
Nascar Racing, that person simply won't (want to?) understand.  They
can only find the reason on their own, and only if they're truly
interested in finding that reason.

Interestingly enough, it was the Nascar simulator that made me start to enjoy
Nascar racing.  I was a dyed-in-the-wool open-wheel fanatic and harbored the
greatest disdain for the oval track boys.

Then I ran the first Nascar sim from Papyrus, and my feelings were confirmed.
I could run away from those other cars without even breaking a sweat.  Wait a
minute?  Why am I sliding so much?  I've only done about 20 laps.  The other
cars are catching... and passing... me.  What's going on?

Ooooohhhhhhh.  So that must be what they mean by tire management, eh? <g>
Well, it wasn't long before I began to appreciate the complexity and strategy
inherent in the Nascar paradigm, and then I started watching the races on TV
and seeing how some cars manage to go forward week after week, and others find
a way to lose.

That's my personal experience, and now here's a fearless prediction:

Nascar will soon find itself the victim of its own success.  The young guns in
the series are real race drivers who will do whatever it takes to win, unlike
the old guard who, more often than not, were sons and grandsons of bootleggers
who grew up in the barn bolting spare parts together.  In the same way that
Ayrton Senna changed F1 by abandoning old-fashioned notions of honour and
gentlemanly sporting behaviour, the new breed of Nascar driver might turn the
series into a demolition derby unless the powers-that-be can figure out how to
pull the reins in.  Should be interesting, eh?

Why should they? Why should anyone go to great lengths to convince someone
who doesn't like Nascar sim racing, when he can spend the time much better
actually racing? :-)

The way I personally feel about it is, those who like the sim will play it,
those who don't, won't. I really don't care if someone likes it or not, as
long as I've got enough good opponents to have great races :-)

The only real bikes are 70's Triumphs anyway.

What he's doing is probably too slow to be considered hotlapping....;)
Another reason he thinks its no big deal...the people that arent very good
at it are almost always the ones that find the sims lacking, anyone else
notice that?

Hey, I've watched NASCAR racing on TV and seen movies like Days of Thunder
and a few others and enjoyed it, but to make a computer game from it just
doesn't make sense. All that is good and exciting about real NASCAR racing
is omitted and all that is left is acutely boring, leaving the player with
nothing to do but set this alarm clock to wake him up before the next bend
so he can twitch the joystick.

Mmmmm.... as a strategy game it might have some merit, and I can could
probably get my dog to do the actual boring driving bit.
