The other day I was looking at computer games when I noticed that N2 can
run on a 486, but a Pentium was required.  How well does N2 run on a
486?

well, I have one of those AMD 5x86x75 chips, which always Id's as an
amd486 dx,,,
running at 133 mhz, and it runs fine for me, although better in dos, if
I turn off
most details, it runs ok  in win95, too, specially since I upgraded to
48Megs RAM.
make sure you have a good video card,,,that appears to be MOST of my
problems, as I
only have a generic trident svga card with 2megs ram. I'm nowhere near
as fast as
the top dogs, but turn low to mid 195's alone and low 196's in the draft
at dega...
with a joytsick...anyways, the point is, a pentium is definitely NOT
required, but
I bet it's a heck of a lot nicer :)

Poorly ;-)  N2 was compiled to take advantage of certain aspects of the
Pentium chips instruction set.  My N2 says that a 486 /16 is the
minimum, but that a Pentium 75 or greater is preferred.

I found that N2 is real choppy on my 486/66 with 16 MB RAM.  I know it's
old, but don't have money to upgrade it now.   I turn off most details,
except car detail and skids/paint.  I can run a 39 car field with little
problems, but it does get choppy at times, and that's even with VGA
(320*200) graphics.

It depends on what type bus you have available also. If you have a 486 with
isa/pci bus, you are in much better shape. With a 486 and isa bus only, it
is only playable in vga with almost no graphics on. Vga graphics in N2 are
not as good as N1. If you really want to play, it's possible, but if you
want to enjoy it, get a pentium.

If you have a 486DX4/100 or better, and a PCI or VESA buss, you should
be able to run in SVGA mode.  I used to run in this mode.  It seemed a
little choppy at times, but worked fine.  I had the car and object
textures on and all others to auto.  Acutally, only the important ones to
auto, the rest OFF.

Well i have a 486dx4 120mhx system just shut off some of the grahics and
she screams i have speeds up to 208.900 mph on taladega of course thats
removing the restrictor plates . Thats easily done just go into the
tracksdirectory then into taladega directory and then edit taladega.txt
simply put Nascar2\tracks\taladega\taladega.txt .     now fine the line
with spdwy change the first digit on that line from 0 to a 1 and save .
PS. this works in Nascar1 as well.
