486 dx4 or dx2 overdrive?

by Scott William Eva » Fri, 16 Dec 1994 04:25:16

Can anyone tell me if I should upgrade to a dx/2 or dx/4 overdrive
processor for my 486/dx33. Intel told me that the dx4 might overheat
because of the voltage difference. They to not warrantee that. ($600 down
the tubes if it does.) The cheapest I have found the dx2 overdrive for is
$245. 66 mhz guaranteed or a 100mhx risk? Please give me some input here.
                                Thanks in advance

Personally, I don't think a 66 is fast enough, especially considering Nascar
svga. I'm considering a dx4 upgrade for my 66 (up to 100), and the sole
motivation is Nascar :-). OTOH, given the risks, you might want to consider a
faster video card PLUS a dx2 upgrade. I do a lot of other work on my PC, and
it keeps up for the most part. Maybe I'll buy that pentium before end of this
fiscal year, afterall.

Go for the guarentee.  You can pick DX2 chips around here for <$200, I've
seen them for $150.

What you have to do to run the DX4 is change the motherboard to run at 3.3
volts instead of 5.5. They wont gar. a 3.3 volt chip in a 5.5 V MB. Most new
boards can be changed by switching a few jumpers, mine requires an extra voltag
e regulator be put in. Check with the company you bought the 33 from to see if
you have these options.
