| May I gently suggest you start with a more forgiving track... I think
Monza is
| possibly the best "beginner" track.  It has simple (no esses) turns
seperated
| by long straights that allow you plenty of time to set up for the next
| corner.   (Ooops, scratch that....
| you're running the demo...)  Well then, buy the full game!!

I think there was a version of the demo with monza

<snip>

I don't really want to be contradictory of some of the guys here because
the information is excellent, but be aware that once you get the new
card and your framerate goes up then you will be able to be more
aggressive when handling the car.  For instance I step 100% on the
brakes into nearly every corner and then ease off as I sense the wheels
are about to lock up.  What you are undoubtedly experiencing here is a
braking problem that is related to your low fps.  Once you get that new
graphics card and up your framerate then try hammering those brakes
again and notice how less likely things are going to go wrong.

What you are doing is ok for now, but don't set them in stone just yet.
Wait for that new card and then develop your own style once you have a
decent enough system to play GPL on, otherwise you may find that you
have developed habits that you may have to unlearn in order to become
quick enough to be competitive.

I've dropped the details in my gpl so I got from 24 to 36 fps.
You won't beleive the diffirence it makes in driveability (is that spelled
correctly?) I didn't beleive it either untill I did it. At 13 fps, well when
you won't be able to keep the car on the limit because you just can't react
fast enough. It's that simple.

If I have a forced feedback wheel, I think it can make me drive even deeper
because I can really sense when my backend is really starting to jump out.
I've improve a little since i got the demo a few days ago, but I am still a
little slow on reacting how the car handles under braking. Like you said,
good fps will help a lot, but FF wheel might be as uimportant

Depends what mode you are racing in? Novice, etc? and where and how you
have gone off? (If you hit a hay bail, spun in the air three times, and
crash landed from fifty feet, but, *didn't* hit the wall, I would say
you could still have damaged the suspension!!!)

8-)

Yes, it is possible to damage the car without hitting walls.

I usually shift just before the redline. If you constantly over-rev the
car, eventually the engine will blow.

They are not turbocharged, but they have a power band after the lower
revs have been passed, that kicks in to accelerate the cars fast.

Current World Record is about 1:03:? My personal best is 1:06. IMHO
anything under 1:10 is pretty good, it took me ages to break the 1:10
barrier.

It *DOES* matter, you must lift off the throttle as you change gear, or
the car will simply over-rev, and eventually the car's engine will blow.
Think about it, you do not keep the throttle planted when you change
gear in a *real* car do you? No, you lift off to lower the revs, (you
are actually matching the revs to the new gear ratio).

A (very simplistic) explanation is that when you brake, the
majority of the weight of the car transfers to the front of the car,
giving the front wheels more grip, so you need more braking power at the
front.

Also, as you brake the rear end lightens, thus reducing rear grip, which
is why the rear wants to try and spin around, if you have more braking
power at the rear, all you do is lock the rears (which have less
traction anyway due to the weight transfer) more easily?

Try easing on the throttle a little smoother, don't just plant your foot
on the pedal.

Also try not to brake really late into the corner and accelerate out as
fast as possible. By braking late you unsettle the car, maybe slide a
bit, maybe get off the correct line, which means the car is not ideally
placed to exit the corner.

If you maybe brake a tad earlier, this will mean are not struggling or
fighting the car around the corner, you can maintain your line, you do
not slide or skid, and (usually) you can actually get on the throttle
(smoothly) a little earlier, thus giving you a faster exit speed for the
turn and a faster speed down the next straight.

Generally, the slow in, fast out technique is the best method in GPL.

Downshifting too soon can also over-rev an engine and cause extensive
valvetrain damage. Something to keep in mind for those who have trouble
completing an entire race without "blowing" their engine. An over-rev on
a downshift is just as bad as an over-rev on an upshift. I assume that
GPL is sophisticated enough to have both accounted for.

Odds are that I replied to a post in this thread but I don't think I
replied with that sentence.  Please be careful of where and how you snip
messages.  If I did say this above, then I apologies.  either way, maybe
you should have left more of the original post so that we could see what
we are replying to?

The very next message I read shows that Gary was replying to me, not me
replying to him.  He is right with what he says!!  In any case, Please
be careful where you snip messages, it gets quite confusing and could
send the wrong message.
