NEW problem with modem in N2

by Jim Fitzgeral » Mon, 10 Feb 1997 04:00:00

Ok, I've read every single post (2300+) in this newsgroup and
unfortunately, I have a problem that noone else has I guess.

N2 refuses to initialize my modem!  The modem works fine in 95 or 3.11
(dual boot) but N2 fails to initialize it in 95 (full and partial
loads), MSDOS mode from 95 (full and partial), straigt boot into DOS
(full and partial) and windows 3.11 (full and, well, you know).

My friend system does the exact same thing.  Any ideas out there?

My system:

P166
32mb ram
stealth 64 pci w 4mb ram
intel etherexpress network card
mustek color scanner
colorado tape drive
teac cd rom (4x)
mag 17" monitor
t2 wheel/pedals
soundblaster pro 16

That's about it.  Most of that ***shouldn't even affect a modem.  I
can post my bios and config stuff if needed.

Immediate help requested!!!

NEW problem with modem in N2

by SimRaci » Mon, 10 Feb 1997 04:00:00

1) What modem do you have?
2) What COM port is it set to in Win95?
3) What COM port is set in N2?
4) What init-string is being used in N2?
5) Can you use the modem with N1, ICR2 or any other DOS
    game using the current system?

Best Regards,

Marc

I have a Magitronics 33.6.  Setup for Com 2 in win 95 and N2.  Init
string is set to AT&K0&M0&N8^M which turns off compression and error
correction and sets it to 14,400 which is identical to the N2 value.

N1 works fine, internet connection works fine in both win 3.11 and win
95.  Quake works fine, doom2 works fine.

Have tried ATZ^M but got same error.

Friend is having exact same problem.  He is not running a network like I
am.  'bout the only thing common between the two systems is win 95.

Thanks for the reply!

NEW problem with modem in N2

by B.T. Nag » Tue, 11 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I have seen this problem. When I saw it, it was on a Diamond/Supra
plug and play modem. Problem was that the modem was using a
"non-standard" IRQ setting for the port in Win95. The modem itself
worked perfectly in Win95, but because it used IRQ 9 or 11 or
something like that, instead of  4 or 3, Nascar couldn't find it
(Nascar II either). On the Diamond modem, it would not allow you to
share resources like regular non-PNP modems do. There was no way to
force the modem to IRQ 4 or 3 if something else was using it (like an
external COM port). If your modem will let you force the IRQ setting
(ie: like a USR modem with jumpers on the modem itself) you may be
able to force it to use standard IRQ settings. That should cure the
Nascar "I can't see it problem". If you can't (if it is configured
strictly with PNP), then you will have to disable one of the com
ports, or realloacate its IRQ to another available one (if your system
will allow it). This is what I had to do with the Diamond modem.

Good luck
