Hi all,

I've written a small report about a day I spent at Nordschleife last week.
It contains my feelings driving around the track and some comparison with
the GPL track. Check it out if interested.

The report can be found at http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Hi !

Good idea! I'll be going to Zandvoort for the xxxx-th time on
saturday/sunday.  Maybe it'd be a good idea to setup a 'day at the
dunes' site....

anyone suggestions ?

Bart

Nice report.

I think in the comparison, you missed the fact that Papy recreated the
Ring in his 1967 state, while the real Ring was modified in 1970/71
after F1 boycotted it with safety concerns.

Back then, some jumps were removed or softened (Quiddelbacher Hoehe,
Kesselchen, Bruennchen, Doettinger Hoehe), trees were cut down, the
track was widened (especially on the Doettinger Hoehe straight), small
run-off areas were introduced, miles of armco were set up, red-white
painted curbs were installed, water drainage was made, and so on.

It were not minor cosmetic changes, they literally moved mountains
there (I have pictures of the construction phase). Like, as you
pointed out, at Hatzenbach, Hocheichen, Adenauer Forst, Metzgesfeld or
Kallenhard, where the "grass bankings" were moved backwards to provide
run-off area or at least a better overview of the track.

Great report!

I think a lot of the changes you refer to between the '67 track and the
present day one are due to the large amount of work done on the
Nordschleife in the early 70's to try and keep the GP. Jumps were eased
and a lot of trees and banks were removed. Armco added most of the way
round. Unfortunately it was all in vain after Lauda's accident.

Hi,

I have been to the Ring a *lot* of times as it's just a 2.5 - 3 hour ride
for me from my home :)
I think Papy did a superb job with their track modelling.
You did not take into account that the Ring had some MAJOR reworking
in 1971. Also, from the Karussell to the Hohe Acht the GPL version of the
Ring climbs definetely upwards as it should be, not downwards as you said.

The elevation changes in a two dimensional picture never look as impressive
as the real thing. It's not a matter of bad modelling. It's just impossible to

preserve the awesome sight onto a computer screen.
(When you visit the Ring the next time make a little detour to Francorchamps
and take a look at the steep climb at Eau Rouge. You won't believe how steep
that corner is. If you stand before it and look at it, it's like looking at a
wall!!)

With all this critizism I finally have to say that your article is a really
nice read.
Good stuff!!

No kidding!  Spa is the only course in GPL that I've been to, driven 'round,
etc. and I've yet to see ANY sim capture how much elevation you gain up the
hill out of Eau Rouge.  That is one big honkin' hill!  Anyone know the actual
elevation stats?

Cheers,

Steve B.

LOL! A small report<vbg>, it was brilliant. It had always been one of my
dreams, to ride through Europe and visit the tracks, factorys and motoring
museums I'd read about all these years. A drunk who decided he needed my
side of the road put an end to my riding, but I got back some of that old
feeling this morning reading your story.

Thanks,

don

You lucky SOB! :). It's a two-and-a-half-day ride from mine :(

Me too!

Hmmm ... well, to me it seems to go downwards right after Karussell, under
the bridge. _Then_ it starts to climb.

impossible to

I very well realize that. I wasn't critizising papy's modelling skills. Like
I said in the article, neither TV picture, photos or video clips do the
elevation changes justice.

Thanks for the tip! Also, Zandvoort might be a good stop on my next trip.

Thanks!

Been there, and still can't believe it.
In GPL and GP2 it's well done, but the F1RS/MGP models are ridiculous.

Standing? While driving towards Eau Rouge you feel like a crash test
dummy going to hit the wall.
I wonder how they keep the gravel in the gravel pit on the left from
moving downhill like an avalanche.

You should try hiking up Paddock Hill Bend at Brands! Gravity *almost*
prevents you from doing it :-)

>I'd like to see those pictures - are they on a website somewhere?

No. They are from a book about the Ring. AFAIR I scanned some of them
and send them to Goetz Poppitz for his Superpatch.
The book and my scanner (and my best GPL machine with a wheel) are "at
home", where I can spent only short time on the weekends - if I'm not
elsewhere. :-/
Like (maybe?) at the Nurburgring, where the "Oldtimer GP" takes place
this weekend, on the modern GP track only though.
Amongst others, GP and Le Mans cars from the years '66 -'71 are
announced, eg. Fittipaldis Lotus 72.
