Nice report.
I think in the comparison, you missed the fact that Papy recreated the
Ring in his 1967 state, while the real Ring was modified in 1970/71
after F1 boycotted it with safety concerns.
Back then, some jumps were removed or softened (Quiddelbacher Hoehe,
Kesselchen, Bruennchen, Doettinger Hoehe), trees were cut down, the
track was widened (especially on the Doettinger Hoehe straight), small
run-off areas were introduced, miles of armco were set up, red-white
painted curbs were installed, water drainage was made, and so on.
It were not minor cosmetic changes, they literally moved mountains
there (I have pictures of the construction phase). Like, as you
pointed out, at Hatzenbach, Hocheichen, Adenauer Forst, Metzgesfeld or
Kallenhard, where the "grass bankings" were moved backwards to provide
run-off area or at least a better overview of the track.
