Hosting a GPL race behind a router....

by Hunkleber » Thu, 04 Jul 2002 04:00:39

Hi

I could do with some help....

When I choose 'host' to host a race, the only ip I can select
is 192.168.0.2 which is my machines local ip. Fine if I want
to race on the lan, but not much use otherwise, because no
one from an external address can connect to me.

Is there a way around this, so that I can choose to accept
incoming connections on my gateway (192.168.0.1), or my
external IP address?

btw. I'm using a Netgear RT314.

Thanks for any info :^)

What you need to do is set up port forwarding on your router. On my Netgear
RP114 router I went to the router admin page, went to the Advanced tab then
to Ports. Under Ports I have forwarded the range 6968 to 6972 and 32765 to
32810 to my race server PC. I found it best to assign static IP addresses to
my PC's and to switch off the DHCP server in my router. I also had to make
sure that my firewall software on each PC was set up properly. Once I had
done this I was able to host on one PC and race on another.

Ok, cheers Phil, I'll give it a shot.

My pc's are already static IPeed, and DHCP is off. I'll disable the
firewall to eliminate that, but is there any reason for these particular
ports?

Yes, they are the ports used by VROC, GPL and N2002. It is all explained in
the readme files for the 2 sims.

Mentioned ports are all UDP. WinVROC also needs port 32000 TCP, but maybe
that's only if you want to start your server remotely?
GPL uses only port 32766 to 32786 (one for logging on and one for each car).
I forwarded port 6969-6971 for WinVROC but I don't think all those ports are
used. I found different port ranges on the net. This is no big deal, but
does anyone now exactly what ports are used?

Jone.
