showing up anywhere, so here goes again....
>How about concentrating on the internet multiplayer support.. like a
>dedicated 'server' program, that could run in unix computers just as
>a server for everyone to connect.. it could also be used to collect

few races, and I only have a lowly P II 233 (a bit o/c'd) and a
Voodoo I. However, I'm sitting here hardwired into a T-1 connect.
In hosting, I can typically have 10~15 players on with little
(if any) problems on my end as long as I don't turn on all the
graphics. Depending on the circuit, I have successfully hosted as
many as 17 while playing.
However, I can turn all graphics down or off (512x res., no
checkmarks) and sit in the pits and host a full field of 20 with
little problem.
Now, if Papy could just remark the video display code out of the
source and recompile into a "cheap server", it'd be a boon for
those of us who might host races w/o playing, or I could move the
code over to one of the other computers here (also on the T-1)
and be able to turn up my own graphics.
A further server improvement would be to allow the host to
"schedule" races, practices, etc. by date and time, and just walk
away from the thing. If I can't play, why not let others who can
take advantage of the bandwidth available? (If I have to go out
of town, I could schedule Int. Long at Monza at 10am, the Ring at
2pm, Novice at Mexico for 4pm, and a pro at Monaco (frightening,
isn't it?) for 8pm.
Just my $0.02
