GPL: Adjusting Setup For Weight (Kylami)

by Jason Smit » Tue, 01 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I've had GPL for about 1 and 1/2 months now, but I'm just back from a
6 week vacation from my computer so consider me fairly new to GPL.

I was taking some test laps at Kyalami having a hard time stringing
together very consistent laps on a track that I generally like so I
just said***it and clicked world championship, I choose grand prix
setting (it's worth noting I've never raced anything more than novice,
and never with any damage settings).  I load up Allison Hine's Kyalami
setup for the eagle and go out in the first practice, I run a best of
a 1:38 which is quite a ways off the pace(yet a Personal Best at the
time, told you I'm new).  I come back to the pits and load my car up
with 80 laps of fuel just to see how it drives (Remember I've never
driven further than a novice race)  I go out and on my first lap run a
1:37 by my 10th lap I've run three 1:27's in a row.

Ok, enough story telling now for some questions for some of the
driver's around here.  The car drove great with 80 laps of fuel in it.
I found I could really place it well in the corners, yet when I drop
the fuel down to 4 laps to save weight, the top speed is definitely
better, but I'm very inconsistent and my laptimes are about 10 seconds
of my best.  So I guess my question is how do I get the car to feel
like it does with more weight?  I'm sick of fighting the car in every
corner, I could drive a grand prix length race with the car heavy, I'm
lucky if I can run 4 laps with the fuel setting lower.

Another question, what's a good baseline time to aim for at Kyalami?

And finally, any general tips for Kyalami?

Thanks in advance

Let's see, 1 1/2 months minus 6 wks equals....so you just started today!
Jason, at this stage I wouldn't mess with setups AT ALL. Take the default
setups and save them with a lower fuel level under a different name. Right now
your driving/lap times are going to improve every dozen laps and it will have
nothing to do with the setup of the car, and you will improve faster if you
leave the setup alone.

Make consistent lapping your main goal right now. Don't try to go fast, just
stay on the track and follow the racing line. Learn all the tracks. When
learning a new track I do about 20 laps using the F10 view, after that I stay
in the car. You'll focus more on your driving in training mode than in race
mode at this point.

The time of the include replay, 1:20.86, is a worthy goal, and you have the
replay to study. Get a utility called SpyGirl, it will allow you to combine two
replays,(yourself and the included replay for example)it's a great way to study
what others are doing.

For Kyalami and every other track, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. It sounds
obvious but it's everything in gpl.

Drive the Coventry/Cooper! It is heavy and sort-of slow, but fun and
forgiving to drive. Lets you concentrate on the lines not the swing!
Then again I really like that quality in the Eagle.
