Need some help - Bummed with GPL

by Goober Gilber » Tue, 21 Jan 2003 15:55:45

Hi all,

Trying to install GPL. It is the Sold-Out software version. Install GPL,
reboot, install the v1.2 patch, reboot, install the CPU fix to v1.202,
reboot, install D3D patch.

Problem is the game is slow. Menus are slow, driving is jerky, just sucks
overall. The graphics are good looking though.

Tried disabling a lot of the in game graphics options; same effect. Tried
the OpenGL patch; same effect. Game runs ver slow and jerky.

System is a Soyo SY-KT400, XP2400, 512MB DDR, WinXP Pro SP1 w/ latest bug
fixes from MS, Video is a GF4 Ti4200 w/41.80 drivers. Installed DirectX 9
(since I had to reinstall).

System passes all directX tests, 3D benchmark of 11765, NAS2002 and
F12002/GTR2002 both run great, as they should.

Anyone have any ideas/help ?

Thanks, Goober

Have you made sure you are using the d3d or opengl video?  Even tho you
hae the patches installed, you still have to choose between the two 3d
drivers or the software mode.  2nd.  Have you examined the core.ini file
and set your 3d section up to match your type of video card.(if there are
no settings for the GF4, check the readme file.)  Racesim central has an
updated Opengl driver that works very well with GF cards.  Search for it in
the GPL forum.

Yes I have selected the D3D or OpenGL in the sim, rebooted and then selected
the resolution. I have downloaded the Racesim Central OpenGL driver and
tried it. No luck with either. GPL runs like it is in a tub of molasses; it
is slow and jerky.
I have not examined the core.ini yet. Grew weary last night and need to get
some work don today. I will check it out this afternoon.

My controller is a Logitech Wingman Formula Force GB if that would have
anything to do with it.

Thanks

Have you installed the cpu speed patch?

Yep, the v1.2 patch, the CPU speed patch (takes to v1.2.0.2 I believe) the
D3D patch and the OpenGL patch (both papy and racesim central). Have the
same problem with 30.82 drivers.

Disabled fast writes in the BIOS and set the AGP speed to normal. Tried
editing the Core.Ini file to bi-linear and no mipmapping (setting 2) set the
mirrors to draw only 1/2 each redraw. How do you check framerates in GPL ? I
don't think it is a framerate problem though, since no altering of things
that effect framerates seem to have a impact. Same problem at 640x480 and
1024x768. Tried with anti-aliasing on and off. Same problem. Same for
antistropic filtering.

Really a bummer as I was hoping to use GPL for our offline race nights. Run
NAS2002 now. Any other sims that have good multiplayer with AI cars ? I
would love to use GTR2002 but we all know what the multiplayer is like in F1
2002; LOL

Thanks

FWIW, you can get GPL Framerate by hitting ALT-F when in-car.  Maximum Framerate
for GPL is 36.

Sorry, can't help with the other problems.....

Alt-F for framerate. It's capped at 36fps.

Just a thought, but is gpl installed on an NTFS partition by any chance?

Yes it is on a NTFS partition, BUT I am pretty sure indexing is enabled. I
will re-check that. It is also installed on a RAID0 array. Possible that it
does not like the RAID Array ? When I start GPL up there is HD activity.
Then after exiting GPL and restarting it, after say changing the 3D
acccelerator, there is no HD activity and it runs the same. Menus are slow
driving is slow and jerky.
I did try setting the sound acceleration down, but to no advantage. The
sound card is a Hercules GameTheaterXP.

Thanks Much

I have a win2k machine with gpl installed on an NTFS partition. It just came
straight back to desktop without indexing, so I guess that probably isn't
it.
Raid might affect it, although I can't really think why, but you could say
the same about the indexing ;-)
