is it just my imagination or are the ai drivers in viper racing kind of
dumb? they consistently run right into me when i have the line knocking me
out of the race. it's not even fun because i know one of them will cream
me - it's only a matter of time...

My thought exactly. Damned frustrating.
I bet the AI drivers think WE are the stupid ones.

One thing though; they respond to the horn! Giv'em a honk and sometimes they
break and let you pass!

I tend to agree with you but if you review the replays carefully you will note
that some of the contact is as much your fault as it is the AI's.  I think
most of the problem lies with the AI being extremely aggressive which caused
them to over drive the car in tight racing situations, especially in hard
braking corners.  They seem to make up their minds to take a corner at a
certain speed and line and the hell with anyone that might be in the way.  The
first lap requires you to drive very defensively at the same time being very
aggressive, very-very-very difficult to do, so as to put some distance between
you and the cars behind.  Yes, it can be very flustrating  but it is great
when you can put a good race together. No if only I could win the GT Class,
the closest I've come is 6 points short.  Paul

Hmmm..I normally see the exact opposite. They get out of my way when I come
inside them or have the line.

If they would get out of my way I'd win 50% of the GT Class races and place in
the top three the other 50%.  Paul

I don't find the ai drivers that dumb. If you stay _on line_, and
leave the ai drivers enough space, there shouldn't be a problem.
Though, they don't back off when you're a bit in front of them to
avoid a crash, as they do in other games.

You can't really blame it on the ai.  I race online alot and other human
drivers hit me more often, just cause one of use will eventually make a
stupid move.  If anything the ai is better at avoiding accidents than most
human drivers i race against, with a few exceptions.  You must also consider
what you are doing.  If the ai is already turning towards the apex he isn't
going to have much time to react to some jerk who suddently decides to cut
under them.
The way the ai acts seems to be based upon an individual's driving
style.  I find the ai quite defensive rather than aggresive.  Whenever i get
under one it usual slams the brakes and ends up in a tree someplace on the
far side of the corner.  Yet I've seen others who seem to have ai cars
permanently welded to thier own.

I agree. The Viper AI much more often seems to back off and try to avoid hitting
me than they do hit me. And I'm not so sure its them hitting me as it is me
coming into them.
