"Super Speedway"--IMAX DVD--a review

by Galle » Tue, 10 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I just finished watching my copy of "Super Speedway" on DVD, and I must say
I was very impressed.  I bought this strictly from recommendations on the

Let me start by saying that this is a 50-minute IMAX feature film released
recently on DVD by Image Entertainment.  It retails for $19.99.  Also
included is a 45-minute feature about the making of this IMAX film.  "Super
Speedway" originally came out in 1997, and was shot in 1996.
"SS" was made with the cooperation of the Newman/Haas racing team, as well
as CART and other racing teams.  The film deals mainly with the design,
construction and performance of and Indy car.  Mario Andretti is the
featured driver, along with his son, Jeff. It is narrated by Paul Newman.
An 80-pound IMAX camera was mounted in various positions on a three-year-old
Indy car that did not need to adhere to CART's rules.  More downforce was
necessary, and the horsepower was raised to more than 1,000.  While some of
the action sequences were filmed with just Mario in the camera car, and Jeff
in his regular Indy car, there was a full-speed racing sequence shot prior
to the '96 Toronto race.  There are also sections that take you to
Cosworth's and Lola's garages for the actual design and construction of the
cars; very interesting.
So how does it look and sound?  Many people on the DVD newsgroup have said
that this is one of the best sounding discs, and I must agree.  While you
won't be blown out of your seat with low-end rumbling, tornadoes, bus
crashes or explosions as in other discs, you will be treated to amazingly
crisp sound as you have never heard it before.  At more than 200 m.p.h., on
a track all to yourself, you can really hear how the car moves through the
wind and its environment.  there's these incredible "whooshing" sounds when
a bridge is driven under, for example.  Since this disc features Dolby
Digital surround sound, in all its glory, you will feel like you are the
driver, with the sounds from your opponents coming from every direction.
Visually the film is stunning as well.  First of all, the IMAX format uses
film that is 10 times larger than standard 35mm, so there is incredible
detail to each frame.  Now, just imagine a camera strapped to the roof of an
Indy car traveling more than 225 m.p.h.  Believe me, you've probably never
seen racing footage like it.  The sense of speed really has to be seen to be
appreciated!
Along with the great racing action, there's a terrific sub-story which
involves a 1960's roadster that is found in a barn.  In fact, it is the
first roadster that Mario Andretti raced!  We watch as the car is dragged
out of the barn, and towed to the garage, where eventually it is completely
restored, right down to Mario's name on the side.  Mario honors the cars
owner by taking it out for a cruise on a country road which is straight out
of "Need For Speed III".
Of course, we find out how all of this was done in the 45-minute "Making of
Super Speedway", which I found to very interesting, not just from the
logistics but from a technical perspective.
"Super Speedway" is a disc which deserves to be in every race fan's library,
as well as every film lover's library.

Great review!  I saw it at an IMAX theatre, and also on Laser Disc (which
also includes 'the making of' part.  Great movie, especially for
CART/Andretti fans.  BTW, a small correction:  The featured drivers are
Mario Andretti and his son Michael.

"Super Speedway"--IMAX DVD--a review

Nice little review there, Galley!!

I still haven't seen the movie .. much as I wanted to when it was on at our
IMAX theatre here in Toronto. Never had the time to make it to the show - I
think I'll check to see if it is scheduled to make a return screening
sometime.

Btw, I am * IN * the movie!! (I damn well better be, anyhow!)

I was marshalling at the Toronto Indy, just round the bend from the end of
lakeshore (they make the slow right-hander, then accelerate through a
slight-left onto a short straight section. I was at the flagger's cutout on
the driver's right mid-turn.)

If I remember correctly, Mario came out towards the end of the of the
Saturday afteroon, probably around 4:30pm. We'd had a VERY long day, having
to be trackside for something like 8am, and it was a hot day as well. I
think there might have been one session left in the afternoon - we just
wanted the day to end so we could go sit down! Then they announced that
Mario would be coming out for a couple of laps to shoot this mysterious IMAX
footage.

I believe he only did a couple of laps - I seem to remember some other cars
being on the track at one point (possiblity he came out in Sunday's
warmup?), but I also remember him just being out on the track by himself.
That was one BIG camera, that's for sure! As he passed us, I leaned out of
the cutout a bit and waved (had orange gloves and sunglasses). I think the
camera should have been right on me - it is a "panormic angle" on those IMAX
cameras, right? :o)

So if you watch it again in the next few days, let me know if you see me! ..
orange gloves waving at the camera, right side of the screen as he makes the
left just after the end of lakeshore!

Cheers!

(Anyone know if it's available on video?.. (although probably wouldn't do
the movie justice)

Ummm, that was Michael.  Not Jeff.  Jeff is in the bonfire scene though.
IMO, don't buy this DVD if you're looking for a quality film.  The story
is really pretty lame.  For sound, image quality, and absolutely
spectacular in car footage, this disc rates an A++.  One other thing,
don't go into this film expecting a whole bunch of technical detail.  A
vast majority of CART and F1 fans will already know the technical bits
that are presented.

Another "thumbs-up" here, I bought Super Speedway the day it came out and
wow, especially if you have a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound setup on your home
theater, it really gives the system a workout :-)

Hoping that somewhere MGM movie engineers are working on a digitally
remastered DVD version of "Grand Prix" the movie..

Seeyas on the track.

I'm in one of the scenes......

I'm at Mid-Ohio, at the end of Thunder Valley just before the cars enter the
Carousel.  There is a high shot showing the cars on the final pace lap.
There are people sitting on the grass (several hundred).

I'm one of them..... :-)

I will get the actual frame time so you can jump to it.  I'm wearing a red
shirt, but the shot was so far off that you can't make out individual
people.  I just remember that i was at that spot (a favorite of mine) for
the start of that particular race.

An interesting note about this film.

In Paul Van Valkenburgh's column of issue Vol 8 No 1 of RaceCar
Engineering Magazine he talks a little about the making of the film.
The IMAX camera was redesigned to isolate it from vibrations and get
its weight from 100lb down to about 55 lb so that it could be mounted
in various positions on the CART cars. Mario said it still felt like
there was a Volkswagen sitting on the car...   To be able to run with
the other cars in practice sessions at cometitive speeds, he was
allowed to increase the boost pressure.  This allowed him to manoeuvre
around the other cars at greater than racing speeds.  The other racers
weren't informed and they really were a little disturbed at being
blown off so easily... until they found out what was going on.

Mario ended up blowing the engine but they didn't get it on film since
it happened right before he was supposed to manually start the camera
for a sequence.
